The anal fin is the key for sexing. The male has a thick muscular anal fin, the females a thin, "normal" looking fin. Here are a couple of shots from the 18" male and 12" female I had.

I believe this method works for all bichirs, atleast the upper jaw ones anyway. Never kept lower jaw ones so can't say for sure.

If the albino bichir is a senegalensis, which i think they normally are, then it is an upper jaw so should definately work. I would imagine they mature around 9" so from that point on you should be able to tell.

Sexing based on the anal fin works on every bichir. Some bichirs like the ornate needs to be at least a foot to be accurately sexed. Others like the albino senegal can be sexed around 6-8".

Awesome info guys, thanks :)

So far this is an amazing animal to watch. It's moving around just like a snake on land and exploring every inch of the tank.

Here's a couple more pics.

I HOPE YOUR NOT TO ATACHED TO YOUR OTHER FISH IN THE TANK CAUSE ORNATE'S CAN EASILY GET HUNGRY AND LET ME TELL THEY DON'T CARE HOW BIG OR HOW MUCH IT COST YOU THEY WILL TRY TO EAT IT.... I HAVE A FEMALE ABOUT 18" LONG AND SHE GOES AFTER MY FISH AT NITE WHEN EVERY THING IS DARK....

SHE'S A GREAT LOOKING BICHIR TELL YOUR MOM SHE'S ALSO A GREAT MOM FOR GETTING THAT FOR YOU.... HAVE FUN....:naughty: :naughty:

Thanks puffer, takes a few bad ones before I get a good one, but that's the beauty of digital camera.

1ra8der, I've had to remove one fish that the poly seemed to be stalking. It should be a good convict population controller from what you're telling me lol. I'll probably move the silver dollars out soon.
