i know im a bit paranoid but i just went snorkling in Boracay, Phils. im just curious if there are any aggresive seawater fishes out there... we fed them and most just nibbled and not one bit me... just in case i go snorkling again i'd want to know what to watch out for hehe:D thanks!

When our rescued fish were still in their 55 gallon tank, I spent at least an hour a day vacuuming and doing water changes. The tank was extremely overcrowed, and contact with the fish was unavoidable.

The pacu liked to be petted, and would push each other out of the way and then swim in place under my hand for petting. This all changed when the fish were put in their new home. The top of the tank is so high, I have to stand on a step ladder to put my hands in the tank. There is also nothing to vacuum out...so no reason to put my hand in the tank, so the pacu went several months with no petting.

One day in front of guests, I got out the stepladder and put on a show petting the pacu. I petted one pacu, and then moved the ladder to the other side of the tank where the bullied pacu had been hanging out to get away from his rambunctious brother. I was wraggling my fingers in front of him when he suddenly chomped down on my third finger. It hurt and bled profusely. I've never gotten off a ladder faster! Pretty embarrassing being that I had been showing off.

20" pacu. The outline of his mouth was clearly seen on the side of my finger. I was lucky not to lose a finger. The really bad part was that I was undergoing chemotherapy at the time. My fish bite is part of my medical record. Was told that fish harbor a host of diseases. They would not even consider a small aquarium in the oncology unit of the medical center because of the potential of infection of the patients. I was very lucky not to lose a finger or get a severe infection.

i have three 14 inch peacock bass and i feed them live 5 to 7 inch wild florida shinners. one day i was pulling a shinner they had killed but not eatin out of the tank and one of bass slammed my hand and bit my nuckels. it scared the **** out of me at first because it was so sudden but it didnt hurt and later i laughed about how startled i got.

My Rose Queen nails me all the time while cleaning the tank. He has those small little teeth but what you really feel is the pressure of the bite. It is surprising that an 11" fish can clamp down like that. He usually bites, holds, and shakes a bit too. Now I wear Aquagloves so I don't bleed....

Burt :)

i have kept and still keep alot of aggressive fish.. i go into their tanks all the time..carefully of course.. some of the aggressive fish are actually not much of a threat.. they are big and you can see them and sometimes they even back off.. but put your hand in an african tank and you are doomed... i did not realize this until the other day... when they were all hungary and seem to bite me at the same times.. what a scary feeling:D

Pacus can be nasty. There has been good posts here. :)

When I was younger, probably 6 years ago, I was on a snorkel trip and threw a hot dog into the water by this child, about 500 fish swarmed to eat the hot dog in a feed frenzy, she may have got nibbled, but it was one of the funniest things I saw at that time... I dont think much of it now.
