I don't think it's illegal. I mean look at all the goldfish given away as prizes at carnivals and fairs. They give them away to anyone. Also, we've all seen fish at one time or another being treated inhumanely. Eventhough fish are pets, they still aren't thought of as pets that have feelings like dogs, cats, etc... It's a sad fact. Fish given away to citizens to be accidentally tortured is different than fish that are the owned property of a business that has to adhere to specific laws and conduct. Thats all im saying. I know worse things happen but a business usually has to do things within set limits. I dont think a pet store would last long throwing sick dogs at the cement and therefore I would hope the same would hold true for fish. Although I may very well be wrong.

and what about the trout they sell at the grocery store? they pull them out of the tank throw them on a board and smash them with a mallet...

darn. I wouldn't be able to do that. My conscience is really strict. I'd keep thinking that they make medications for a reason, and that I should flood my basement and use it as a hospital tank. I can fillet and gut a dead fish that I caught, but that's cause they're meant to be eaten. killing a fish that could've been or was someone's pet would be like stabbing a dog that's been with you your whole life. it just doesn't seem right.

That does suck.Maybe you can try and take some in,or like the others said try a less violent method.Dont push too hard its a new job and all,but maybe you could suggest it.

i work in a pet shop and we certainly NEVER do anything to kill fish.... they are placed ina quarantine tank and treated... either surviving or not, but we never euthanize. As for throwing against a wall, i would imagine that is bordering on RSPCA / SPCAcomplaint time

I read somewhere that freezing the fish is the most humane thing to put it out of its misery.

Why can't the store get a big deep freezer and do that?
