Black and White Oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah they are sold as 'wild oscars' here in the stores. Where I am they are always small but they are also the same price range as any of the tiger or albino oscars.

I have never been too crazy about Oscars but if that is in fact just their natural color then that is one nice fish.

I think they are wild caught. Orinocco or Peru type. Saw some at my LFS for $18.00 for 2.5" little guys. The color seems to be a very dark green as opposed to a true black. Made me consider trading in my Midas for one of these guys.

Ah, I gotcha. So in other words I just need to keep goin to my LFS in hopes that they'll one day have one huh?

Not a cross breed......Wild Oscars look like the one pictured above........The price for these normally go around $10-20 for a 2 inch individual, well worth the investment...........I purchased a pair that looked exactly like the one pictured $120.......Both fish were 10-12 inches lip to base of tail.................

So they don't look the standard black/orange color in the wild? Too cool, I sooooo wish I could find one of these right now, I'd be more than happy to invest $20 in a little guy.

You, sir, are absolutely correct. I've never been a huge fan of oscars, but got one the other day and love it's personality. If I ever see one of these in the stores you know dang well I'll be the first one to pounce at it

Don't bother buying a young fish unless you've seen both parents. My first Oscar stayed black and white until he hit about five inches, then got orange on him. I'd personally just look for an adult specimen to be sure you're getting what you're buying. You know the Oscar world. Once you buy him, he's yours forever most of the time.

I wouldn't mind experimenting, even if he turned out to be a regular tiger. Half the fun of oscars is watching them grow. I'm not a huge fan of buying fish that are already mature, I'd rather risk it.

Well, I believe I've discovered the mystery (though you should take everything I'm about to say with a grain of salt).

The black/white oscar is known as a "wild oscar", as already said. I believe they're from the Ecuador region.

I'm sure it's already known, but I personally found out about a couple other oscars tonight...

The copper oscar, gold oscar, lemon oscar, platinum oscar, and "wild trinidad" oscar, along with just the "wild oscar" are all new to me today. Here are some quick pics, in that order.

All pics are courtesy of AquaScapeOnline, I never knew there was such a wide assortment of oscars out there:headbang2

And here's a quick vid of a mature gold oscar I just found. These guys are real beauties and would be awesome in an aquarium setting.
