no its not right to keep them in a 55 at all. But i think when it comes to aros people forget how flexible this fish really is. Yes the fish deserves a big tank. But for most people a 180-300 gallon tanks arent easy to afford or keep running. I've gorwn up around aros since i was 2 years old. Ive seen them in big tanks and small tanks. I've seen an aro live for 10 years in a 125. I sold my first silver aro at 16 inches because i didnt want him to stay in a 55 with other fish. The guy who bought it brought it to the lfs all messed up and it died. All im saying that some people who keep them in 125-150 and 180's give them a much better life than most people. I was in the lfs saturday and a guy is there with his son and is telling me his 55 has a huge severum, and a 17 inch silver aro in it and he was there looking for another fish for the tank. I asked him if he planned on getting a bigger tank and he said he was buying a 90 and that was gonna be the life long tank for the fish.

IMO, this is a BS excuse.
If you cant afford to buy and run a big tank, DON'T buy a big fish!

Anything under a 280gal for a Silver Aro is not suitable at all.

LoL...Exactly:thumbsup:

AQUAMONSTER you sure are "wishy-washy" regarding your opinions of arowana and sub-par tanks:screwy:

yea ive owned aros and a 150 is an insult to the species.

BTW you made that comment well after seeing the 30" arowana at the Boston aquarium, so what's up?

well seems to me the bigger the fish, the bigger the tank. smaller the fish, BIGGER THE TANK! YES!! PROBLEM SOLVED NOW ALL FISH ARE HAPPY WOOT!

Since we are in the same topic, is an asian arow good for life in a 110G tank (before start flaming, keep reading) with the dimension of 72" length x 24" width x 15" height? or do they need the height too?

:D

Nobody ever seems to understand this. They cant afford the right tank so they're "forced" to go smaller. Wouldn't be forced if you don't have the fish...
Exactly :clap

On the subject though, until what length/for around how long could a black be kept in a 125?

through my experience with arowanas height isnt too much a factor as width of a tank, fish need alot of room to swim, and seeing as to how all arowanas are surface swimmers, i would have to say that width definitely overcomes the height

i would say they can be in a 125gallon up until they are about 14 inches (more or less) i guess it would depend on the dimension of your tank

The short height is going to be encouraging your aro to jump, which is the last thing you want. Either way, IMO the footprint still isnt big enough.
