here's a question for the people who are voting for black. if you had 10 tanks, would all 10 be black? would you not mix it up with a few natural backgrounds?

I have 3 tanks, all have black backgrounds. The next probably won't, but since I actually want the background to look natural I'm going to DIY a 3D one

What probably looks the best is a well done cement 3D background or real rock background. Failing that I like black and then just let algee grow on the back and if you wait long enough it will look kinda natural just my opinion.

The algae in one of my tanks has turned the background into camouflage, brown and green

Unless I go 3d my tanks will all have black backgrounds... Eventually. But as of right meow I only have one background and I completely forgot to put it back on my tank... So they are all "bare-backed" right now... Which looks better than those "natural" ones I think... Which is kinda funny.

Black seems to make tanks look wider/deeper IMO. Had natural background for many years and swore by it, but now that I have black, I'll never go back.

what i used on my tank was petroleum jelly or Vaseline for the natural background. What you do is spread an even amount over the back of the tank, apply the back ground and they using a credit card or something similar scrap away all the air pockets. Then tape it down. Make sure you cut the background to size, makes it look better
