I have 4 small piranhas and one of them has some black coloring around the gills, 2 of the others are starting to get this as well...
What is it and why ?
Last water change was done about 10 days ago so im getting late but decided to ask if it was caused by something else then bad water quality.
The tank is pretty small for them but ill move them soon. 55x8x8"
The Piranhas are around 4"

yea do a water change and upgrade your tank to a bigger foot print ASAP, Piranhas are exceptional in healing powers is it is a parasite. keep a close eye on there behavior.

Mine are doing this as well. In my case almost the entire gill plate turns black. This seems to happen only at night. From what I can tell their health is excellent and this in no way hinders their usual activity,

Anyone else experience this?

reds do turn black eventually as they mature they dont loose all their red color but it does darken in time, i would say u have nothing to worry about m8, nice fish but try get yourself a bigger tank m8 they can grow quickly

I agree with bigcol.

pretty sure they do it at spawning time

yeah they do but but as ive niticed from what mine are doing atm spawning time they get alot darker and not just around the gills, like i said they do get darker when growing up as in maturing. for example mine are mature but still have bright red colors when most of the time they are very dark and glittery like, looking quite stunning. as they mature the silver body and black spots dissapear to create this affect when spawnning they go alot darker so you can easily tell the diff and its not hard to spot either.
