Heres my final take on it - even if you get an appropriate grade - you might have those undesirable particles.

That being said - fish deal with this in the wild, but thats not to say that it still wont hurt them.

If you want to be completely safe - stay away, there are reliable accounts of it killing smaller bottom dwelling fish, and cutting people's hands even when just planting plants.

Ive also more recently read that people that kept this sand with animals that were sifters ect often times saw scarring of the intestines during necropsy.

This stuff is just as safe as any other substrate u put in ur tank. Although I'm sure ur take on it has some true thoughts about it killing fish, but remember fish get killed by most substrates. Fish choke on gravel or get cut on sharper gravels or stone. I trust it and would never put something in for my fish that could harm them. The petco sand I bought is a lil bigger grain but also felt sharper to the touch.

Every thread on gravels, sand, and so on have pros and cons with people who love and hate them. If it doesn't work out it can be taken out just as easy as it was put in.

Took most the sand out and put it in my shrimp tank. Shrimpies love it, they're happy to have substrate and plants now! This tank is being used as a place to grow up baby plants.

What other places can black sand be bought, for less than the Petco/Petsmart price?

ok guys, I have read all the post about this black diamond sand and see some like it and some don't, everyone has something to say about it but not one person mentioned the most Important part of it... it has a lot of fine pieces of metal in it!!!!!!!! I am using it myself in a few of my tanks and seems to be ok but it has oil in it that you have to rinse out very, very, very good.. you also have to run a very strong magnet through it when you are rinsing it to get the metal out of it... And for those who already use it and don't believe it has metal in it put a magnet in your tank and see what sticks to it!!!!

Honestly that is the main reason I didn't use it,,, the metal shavings, no matter how small & tiny they are they are still there. I actually had a entire push cart of it loaded up & couldn't bring myself to make it to the registar. As much money as I have dropped on my tank & equipment I didn't want I take the chance with a possible iffy substrate choice.. It looks great & it looks like it works great & a lot of folks have had great luck with it.
