Black Gravel

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
one pail of that stuff gave me i would say 2+ inches.... i have no filter issues and i am running an fx5

i have a cascade 1500... i have jeust heard horror stories everybody relax im fine haha:D thanks for all the positive input i will be ordering some of taht black sand today... will post pics of when its all in and what not.... but heres a question, with gravel you are supposed to rinse it out before you put it in, what do you do with sand? cant use a net haha

not to sidtrack the op's thread but...

I know people say black substrate and dark backround help pbass develope their colors, when do you need to have the this done in a tank? Does it help when they are babies or does it not matter until they are juvis. I want the sexiest looking pbass I can get!!

my guess would be when the fish start developing there colors a dark substrate will enhance them, as well as their diet

Could be bad...

darker substrate is for better colors...com'on danh dont sidetrack the guy..
we all know it brings out the color more for pbass...IT IS NOT BAD!!!:screwy:
i guess in your OPINION... who knows... DO YOU LIKE YOUR PBASS PALE with no shade of color?? com'on help the guy with some POSITIVE INFO..:screwy:

just to back myself up in all of this..... i was asking the same questions about substrate when i started raising CIChLA....
when GOOD FELLOW MFK'RS (DM & TONGUE33) helped me out and guided me the right DIRECTION... BY SAYING DARKER SUBSTRATE THE BETTER!!!
and im prettysure if they see this they will back me on this!!!:D

dark is better... and its best to be done before they get into the tank... frequent changing of substrate and backgrond tend to stress fish imo

its is almost the same with gravel, BUT its a lil bit more for sand.....:)

DIRECTIONS thats worked for mee... JUST MIGHT WORK FOR YOU ALSO..;)

hey G_MORNIN,,
first thing to do is get a BIG CONTAINER that will fit you sand inn...
then put all inn (SAND), grab a garden hose and rinse thoroughly...
when i mean rinse thoroughly.. i mean getting your hands DIRTY a' LIL:D..
follow accordingly or DIY the way you wanna go with it...

while your are rinsing with your hose... start mixing the sand with your hands... side to side... under to top... just to get all the excess junk out of it... such as DUST, etc... water MUST be running while youre doin all of this... when the water starts to over flow the BIG BIN or TUBB watever your USING... dump it out,, AND REPEAT the PROCESS as many times as you can,, OR even BETTER if you do it untill the water is CLEAR!!!;)
THEN wait 24hours while SOAKING your sand... and the next day REPEAT the PROCESS of thoroughly RINSING....:D a couple of times just to make sure your sand is ready and all the junk is mostly out of it..... ( no need to wait another DAY) but like i said DIY as far as you wanna go with IT...:naughty::naughty:
IMO no need to wait that long..:nilly: PLS.. MAKE SURE WATER IS CLEAR ENOUGH IN YOUR BIN/TUBB/CONTAINER, watever it may be!!
now your sand is READY...:grinyes:

THEN,,
putting your sand INN the TANK...
another accessorie is needed from your house....:nilly:
FIND a big or better yet the BIGGEST CUP you have and start SCOOPING..
from the container with sand in it...
when grabbing the sand make sure you empty the water in the cup from the sand before you put it in your tank,, just to make sure YOU DO NOT MESS UP your WATER & BIOLOGICALS..;)
so now your putting the sand in your tank and before putting it in cover the cup with your other hand when entering you tank water SLOWLY bring it straight to the bottom of your tank & slowly remove your hand and release the sand once AGAIN SLOWLY...;)
REPEAT the process SLOWLY and you will be SATISFIED with your water clarity and soon enough you will be finished.... after an hour of finishing test your water params, and do whats needed to keep your fish from STRESSIN..
water change maybe,, AND the next day (24-48hrs) clear & clean your cannister filter..so all that biologicals your filter is holding will cycle through the new substrate;) (CASCADE 1500)

and now your FINISHED:headbang2

wait 3-5 days for colors,, and trust, like i said to you before you will be SATISFIED...:nilly: colors might even show sooner!!;)

BEST WISHES & im HOPING FOR BEST COLORS FOR YOUR PEA'S:headbang2

MIKE;)

Black just brings out the color where lighter color substrate will wash out the color.

I use black 3m Pool Sand for my substrate.

thanx for backing... joey.... ;)
