Black or Silver?

That is a problem for you?!?! I'd kill to have half the fish available that you can get in the US. I'm keeping my black aro with a group of Geophagus altifrons, angelfish and a bunch of plecs. Your options are nearly limitless so long as it gets large enough not to be eaten and isn't aggressive towards the aro. My personal preference would be towards South American cichlids, Geophagus, Satanoperca, Uaru, Hoplarchus, severum, discus, etc etc, but there are plenty of other choices. Datnoids, large barbs/sharks, catfish, rays, bichirs, clown loaches are all potential tankmates.
 
That's a major problem Xd. There are so many choices and I am terrible at deciding among what I want. I'll look into the cichlids and see if there are any that seem appealing that won't beat th crap out of my fishies. Maybe pbass and some cats. Not too fond of barbs, dats, and loaches. What is your opinion on silver dollars?

Minimum I wouldn't go anything less then 8' long by 30" wide for just the single aro. Since you are building custom just go as big as you can. An 8x4x3' would be suffice. As far as tankmates go, the skys the limit. Once the aro is 10-11" it can go with most any tank mates within reason. You could probably bet about two years out of the 180g using it as a grow out. Though growth can be unpredictable and maybe only get a year depending on what size you start with.
 
I was wondering it would be better to cut some of the width and add it to the length, so instead of 8x4x3' make it 10x3x3'. It cuts some of the gallons put but it gives the aro more length to swim.

it sounds like money is a definite issue for you. So before diving in head first with a more expensive fish, and a higher gallon tank. I would find the tank first.. That way you are for sure..without a doubt going to be able to house the fish. Instead of just 'hoping' that you'll have enough money in the future... not trying to be rude..just honest

Arowana love length, 10 foot would be the better choice even though you'd be giving up a foot of width.

Money is what I want to sort out. There are a few things that I would like to spend my money on and I need to find out in what areas do I need to allocate money to. The parents have to know that it will be something that I am willing to go through with.

Okay thanks 10' is the longest I can go without taking up all the walking space in the room.
 
i would def say get the tank first then. I know the feeling of allocating money haha, i'm trying to upgrade my tank..as well as modify my truck..
