Is black payara another "name" for armatus? My local fish store quoted me at $70 for a 4-5 inch "black payara"...... i cant see any other payara fitting that description.

I have never heard of that name, eagerly waiting for photos.

Black payara supposedly to be wallacei. A smaller version of Armatus and dark colored. The only way to truly tell is a lateral line scale count.

That would be sweet but i doubt it is a wallacei. I dont think ive ever seen them for sale

They usually come in by accident the so called black payara. But hard to say if it's a darker version of a regular Armatus. A color variant from a particular location. The only way to tell is by size but definitely by scale counts.

When it comes as the seller to get a detailed shot of the lateral line with the scales. If it's in the 100s then it's a wallacei. That's how you know.

I remember a member posting pics of two armies, one considerably darker than the other... So maybe the pigmentation is collection point dependent...?

I dont think the distributor my lfs gets their fish from would know the diff if it cane in with armatus or not. My guess is they would just think its another armatus. If they knew im sure they would of labeled it properly.

Who knows hopefully its a wallacei they are sweet.

They usually max out around 12-14 if im not mistaken?

Ill post pics tom when i get it. Hopefully we/someone can properly id it......i will prob grow it out in a 55. If it ends up being an army ill move it to the 600 if ots a wallacei ill keep it with my tats/characins tank

I rem that thread there was a debate where some thought it was still an army just darker due to collection point and others said it was a wallacei
