wanting to do a amazon biotope. 150g or so. and put one black rhom for the main show pc and maybe some red and white shrimp or crayfish (dont kow ne names, ive seen em around here and there tho) and maybe a school or tetras for some added color. im probably going to end up ordering the rhom from ae aquatics. like $50 fora 3-4" one. i chose this breed because of the crazy body transformations they go threw as they grow. and for the black fish red eyes @ adult hood. (evil looking imo)

i found a couple decent priced 55g's im thinkin about buyin. how long could the rhom live/ be happy. in a 55g. to give me for time for the 150g plan. also, why do some black rhoms look pail and eyes aren't red. like they about to lay down and die.

I would say 2 maybe 3 years in the 55g if you get it at 3-4". if you can get a 75g then go that route instead of a 55g if you find a deal with more much price difference, I just think 75g has a much better footprint than 55g and you can use the 75g for other purpose when you move the rhom to 150g.
the color of the fish changes according to substrate and background of your tank, also genetic plays a role, some black rhom is just not as black as others. some have some blue/purple hue on them, some are just jet black. also stress and mood of the fish also has effect on the color of the fish. and when the fish is sleeping, the color and red eye fade away.
as for the development of red eye, you should start seeing the change at around 4-5".
I've noticed on some of the real large rhom (12"+) the eyes aren't as bright red as the smaller ones, they are more of a dark red color. not sure if that has to do with age.

shipping for ae aquatics is about 65 bucks man, if you get my black rhom it would only be 40 overnight or 20 priority, check out my thread :) pluss! mine is already 4-5 inches

yeah there is a couple on youtube that are jet black - others that r not. thats only thing im afraid of is getting one who's just gonna grow up to look like ****. food wise ima try to keep one on shrimp diet. mainly because shrimp seem to bring out the colors in fish. my tank will be black back and sides. quiet a bit of plants, black sand, and lot of driftwood. not found the perfect setup yet by no means but have seen some really nice ones. the fish in ur avatar is sweet as. he's not jet black but bad ass none the less. 75's are hard to come by used in my area. 55's are common but high unless you just happen to find someone wanting rid of one.

--------------

i may not have to go threw ae aquatics. there is a new LFS ima talk to about getting one threw if they can. i checked urs out tho. $65 for fish, 20-40 shipping. not to bad i dont guess.

on another note. was reading up on these guys earlier today. found some real interestng info. apparently, altho hard. you can have a male and female rhom in a tank, and breed if the tank is @least 200g. now ive also heard there's no chance of them getting along long enough to breed. but - would be sweet.
i know if i wanna breed fish i should just get the red belly's but- they dont have the size i want, nor the color. altho i have seen some blackish red belly's around. plus, dont want the mess or feeding cost of 4-5 predators :grinno:.

something like that. i like the guys background, that allows little fish to have hiding spots. and even tho his eyes aren't bright red he's bad ass none the less. needs a bigger tank imo tho.

these little guys are just bad ass looking. dunno how big they get. to bad couldn't have a sharp black rhom with 2 of the manueli in a nice 150-200ish gallon. same with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jt721UmFnk&feature=related - i like the color on them.

yeah man, check out the elongatus piranhas too! they look amazing and are pretty aggressive, i also have one for sale and he is about 7.5 inches, lol look at all my threads :)

with getting a small rhom to grow out you won't know if it'll be jet black or not until you grow it out, unless you get a large one that's already known to be a jet black one. the color could also be the result of genetic, collecting location and water conditions, probable some other factors too.
personally I like diamond variant better but a jet black one with bloody red eyes is hot too.
good luck with the search of the prefect fish :)
how much does 55g usually go for at your area? you could also consider getting a new 40g breeder (around $100 or so from petsmart) if the price isn't that much different from a used 55g.
as for breeding rhom you'll need a much much larger tank than 200g to begin with so you could house multiple rhoms in it and hoping that some will pair off before they kill each other.

I would also suggest look into manueli, also a very nice show piece fish and can get to pretty large size.

caribes can get to about 14" but will take years to grow.
so are rhom and manueli, if you grow the rhom from 3-4" it'll most like it to max out at around 12" or so. I haven't heard anyone grow a baby rhom to be bigger than 12"

can i house multiple manueli? also is it a spieces that can be housed with others. like maybe a pike pirahna. just tryin to come up with a nice combo. it'll be the only tank i have for a while and will also be in the living room so i want it to look nice.
