do you think the frozen foods they get are enough protein for them? i also throw in some betta pellets every once in a while..gotta use that left over food

Severums are herbivores. They'll eat anything but once they're almost grown they need very little protein.

I would have to disagree.

They still require protein when fully grown.

To clarify, they aren't true herbivores, but Omnivores. They'll eat anything and everything.

The best bet is to get them onto a good quality pellet (when their big enough) and treat them with both veg and insects to keep them happy and healthy. Best way for most fish infact.

Actually I should've said partly herbivorous. So I'll disagree with myself and agree with you :-) It seems the majority of SA/CA Cichlid owners don't bother putting *any veggies in their fish's diet.

Agreed! :-)
Both my Severums actually look identical to yours but I never considered them "light". Mine stripe up like bumblebees when the Oscar chases them.
Robynsfish, yours looks like the color of mine, too. I think it's their natural coloring. Here's my female:

Dominant Severum will be dark olive/black, and to be honest I loved the look of them. Breeding females will also be a very dark olive/black colour. It essentially means your fish is healthy and enjoying itself; not sure if I'd want that to change.

Only properly coloured photo I ever got of my aggressive female.
i agree..it is normal for severums to change colors and even get as dark as almost black due to the stages they are going through... breeding, spawning and dominance changes ..

i'll start adding omega one mini cichlid pellets to the diet, i'll replace one feeding of the super veggie with the pellets instead, see if it helps with growth..just did a warm water change, and the big black severum is now a pretty reddish tannish green color with a few stripes, shaking his thang at the new gold sev...who is FINALLY out of hiding and out and about..the new gold has some reddish dots on his/her face and a pretty red anal fin..i'd love to find my measuring tape and measure them...my best guess, the largest black one is 3 1/2 inches body, plus another inch tail.. the gold sev is close to him in size, hard to tell with the color difference.. the other 2 sevs are half an inch to an inch smaller.
O.T, but my convicts i'm growing out in there are an inch and a half now, and still no obvious difference in sex.. i'll be annoyed if i got 6 convicts and their ALL male..lol

whats a good temp to keep the sevs at? normally their tank is 78ish..with the warm water change it upped it to 81-82...woops big black sev is back to his normal dark color, apparently he made he made his point to the gold..

they really seem to be enjoying being able to graze on the anacharis, whats another good plant to keep in there to feed them? they dont seem to like romaine or any kind of fresh veggie if it doesnt grow under water..lol

they do however, enjoy those annoying little snails that over take your tanks,, anyidea where i can get them in bulk? i hav epuffers who enjoy them too, and my lfs wont give me them anymore.

Right then, prepare for a flaming :D

Your tank is FAAARR to small my friend.

2 sevs need a 55 Gal minimum (thats an established breeding pair in my opinion, with no fighting and no tank mates.)

By my count, you've got 4 now, so thats 110 Gal you'll be needing :D

On a second note, having 6 convicts... as soon as they start breeding (and they wont be far away from it at 1") their going to tear your severums apart.

On a THIRD note :) Don't do warm water changes!! New water should be the same temp as the tank water. and a jump of 4 degrees is actually pretty drastic for your fish.

On topic, they'll eat any plant you put in there with them. But its best to keep them on Veg if you can swing it.

As for the snails, they'll soon lose interest as they put on a bit of size, so i wouldn't advise buying more :) you'll soon have to many to handle when your Sevs have had their fill :D

i know they sevs will need a larger tank, they are small now(compared to what they will be), as they grow i plan to upgrade.

my original plan was to move my SA cichlids to my 75, and the sevs and co. into the 55. but my 75 broke in storage (i blame the movers). As it stands i plan on getting myself a 150 long for my SA's come christmas time, and doing some post x-mas scanning of craigslist for a used 75 or larger tank for the sevs and just selling off my 55 and the 35.

the cons are just in there until they grow out some, once they are larger, they will be going into my SA tank with a flowerhorn a dempey and a pair of oscars, where if they do pair off and breed, the fry will be used as feeders for my puffers. they dont show any signs of pairing off yet, and the females ( if there are any) still havent developed the pink belly colors. once i figure out what sex everyone is, and if there is too much drama, the males will be going into one tank, and the females into another, or once i pick out favorites, the rest will be going back to the lfs... havent quite decided yet which route i'll take with them.

the warm water change wasnt on purpose, they've been working on the water pipes in my complex and for some reason the water was just that warm this week, i know you shouldnt make drastic temp changes, i was just making sure that i was honest and everyone got the correct info so i could get the right help.

I also have a 20 gallon tank with 3 figure 8 puffers who need the snails as part of their diet to keep their beaks trimmed, i try to keep the snails in my other tanks and feed the puffers as i go, otherwise the puffers eat all the snails in one sitting.

i appreciate the advice, i wouldnt call it flaming unless its done rudely though:)

what kind of veggies are good to offer? or is it ok to just keep a supply of anacharis and other soft plants for them to nibble on? i'll be picking up some omega one mini cichlid pellets tomorrow to add to the daily feeding rotation, i need to get the cons used to pellets any way, its what i feed in the larger tank.

yea japes explained it very nicely

severums are lighter in tone when they are stressed out
my dominant male turqouise is very dark like yours
