"Black Shark" info?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've read they get huge, and will attack any fish it wants. I can't remember his name, but the guy with the 55k tank had a black shark in it that terrorized the tank and if I remember correctly it ended up killing a lot of fish including 1 or 2 arapaima that were a lot bigger than the black shark itself.

so unless you have a monster tank (thousands of gallons) I would stay away.

I had one for about six months that was around 5" long. It's behavior is similiar to a red-tailed shark, but I found him to be less aggressive towards big fish. He grew quickly and was pretty territorial. I ended up getting rid of him because my other fish were outgrowing him and tattering his fins when I was at work.

I think they can get pretty mean.

I have one right now in a 120 gallon with 2 clown loaches and 2 red-tailed botia, he is about 6" and currently only bothers a rainbow shark. When I first added him he chased everything, now he has a hard time eating since the others destroy the food before he can get to it. Some past experiences with black sharks, do not put any slow moving fish or amphibians with it, they have a tendency of eating on other animals that wont get away fast enough, ex. rope fish, polypterus, gars, paddletail newt, notice that these animals wont fight back either.

had one at 3" killed my 7" needlenose gar, and 5" blue torpedo sharks. I gave it to my friend and it killed his 8" warmouth. they basically "suck" the life out of the other fish

Mine is about 24" and is fairly aggressive but not overly so. It will chase big stuff about, but leaves small stuff alone. She seems to have met her match in the last couple of weeks as my bigger RTGG (18" or so) has started fighting back and seems to have calmed her. I will have to see how far it goes as the RTGG will have to go if it stresses the shark too much.

My 26" Morulius chrysophekadion is in it's 19th year with me. I find it very aggressive and it has killed many large fish in the past including 3 large red tail cats Phractocephalus hemioliopterus and a 5'6" Arapaima arapaima.

I've owned others and never experienced it's level of aggression in the past.

It is not safe in either of my big tanks. So I over winter in 180 to 540g tanks and put in ponds in the summer.

ive always been a huge fan of black sharks., esp when they get some size on them and get a nice jet black...but yes once they get an attitude they like to suck on the sides of fish and chase whatever they can. ive had some that were fine and some that were just awful..last one i had tho was sadly a midnight snack for my red tail at the time...
if i didnt have my large mouth bass at the size he is i would get a small one.
sooo...my opinion..great fish..get one!

ps.. arapaimag..please more pics of your large black shark??

Josh,

Might be able to take newer pics in Spring. Operation and problems from therapy prevent me using right arm for a couple of months.

I've experienced my Morulius chrysophekadion losing their black as they age and getting more gray. Could be a different diet? How big is your BS?

I would say the same regarding colour. If you check the pictures on fishbase (although I don't believe all of their pictures are identified correctly as chrysophekadion), even in their native environment, they don't stay dark as they age.

That is a fair old hit list your black shark has taken out. I've been quite lucky and don't have that level of aggression.
