Black Tahitian Moon Sand?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What about 3m color quartz for fishtanks? I've heard of ppl using it. Does anyone know if it has an effect on pH or if it maintains color well? I've know nothing about it...

What do you guys know about 3m color quartz? Is it safe to use in fish tanks? Because it is a lot cheaper then moon sand... and it is supose to hold up very well and it's not sharp. Anyone use it before?

T-Moon sand is perfectly safe for use with Geos. Actually, the grain size is small enough for the to sift it out of their gills as is their natural technique (rather than s[otting back out as they have to do with gravel).

It all comes down to preference. Since Geos aren't generally found on black sand, I'd choose to use a more natural looking substrate like PFS. Same performance and CHEAP!

Go to cichlidforum.com for lots of info about ColorQuartz.

I use the black tahitian moon sand and it has been great.. my only concern has been when it gets shifted around. if a bunch of the sand gets pushed up and goes through the filter it can cause probs with the impeller

IMHO, the black moon sand is too light. I loose a buttload during water changes and my flowerhorns filter is always clogged with it. I actually got home yesterday and the filter had shut off after being clogged with sand.

I use pool filter sand. Cheap but i would rather use a blacksand. Cecropia do you use prefilter? If that sands fine enough to get passed a prefilter i wouldn't reccomend it.

How bout black silica sand (used for sandblasting)??? It's much cheaper, but I'm not sure how safe it is or what is looks like aesthetically? Has anyone use this sand?

No prefilter. It'd be a great idea if I wasn't about to upgrade him. All my other tanks have pool filter sand and a bunch of diggers, it's not nearly as bad in those tanks.

used to have it in my tank but took it out. It was fine with smaller fish, but bigger fish spat it everywhere, usually directly into the filter intake. After many HOBs making noise and needing too much maintenance work I took it out for gravel.

I think it looks awesome when set up with the right fish tho
