  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
as long as the fish is bigger or same size with some bulk than your good buddy, mine is good with cichlids and red hook's the tank size is just a 125, but i had 4 red hook's and a melanarus cichlid in with him in a 75 gal and my black is 13'':D

black wolf is really choosy on food..but it still eat pellet.

that's fine with me. Pellet is good. the tank currently gets pellet shirmp and silversides. As long as I can get it from the store or LFS and there is at least two fish in the tank that will eat it then I'm happy.

Thanks for the info.

If I can sell off this 125 I don't use I'll look into getting a black. but I need this other tank out first.

Does anyone have any expereince with Black's and dare i say... other wolves? I'm getting the urge to add one to my already stocked tank but I get the feeling it will be the usual case of being dependant on the specific individual.

@Jelly,

As you are in the UK, did you get your blacks from Wildwoods or an alternative source?

Sorry for the hijack..!

It's probably to early to tell yet. I would guess it would be the 'Other wolves' that would be the problem. tank size would play a facture though. I do have a second 'Black' Wolf that I have tried to comm and it relentlessly attacks anything regardless of size. It's like a mini aimara.

Yes got them from Wildwoods. I am talking to them at the moment to check availability for someone else. I will let you know.

the other wolves are my pair of Golds, the hope would be for them all to end up in a 300 this year but that depends on my own personal accomodation..!

An Aimara would be pretty darn good. That and an Armatus- yet to see either in the UK. Even Arapima have made it here!

koop since we're on the topic i'm going to add some questions of my own, if you mind, let me know and i will start my own thread.

aggression: i've been told xingu blacks(max size 18") are less aggressive than malas, is that true?

growth rate: again, been told that they grow 1" every 3 months, and hence i'm thinking if i order a 6" one i can get away with at least 2 years with a 75gal(4x1.5x1.5)? or am i mistaken? i have a spare 5x3x2 just in case anywas, but i really would prefer it if he were not with my gars

compatibility: is a large black wolf-say14-18"- likely to spazz out and attack 20+" cuban gars?

jumping: are black wolves known to be jumpers?

thanks for the help:)

I am currently trying to get an aimara and have a couple of leads. An armatus would be cool aswell. I would have though that as long as the golds are of a decent size it should work. Unfortunatly until someone tries it we will not know.

The Xingu Black which is supposed to be the same fish that we are speaking about, Hoplias curupira is found across the northern part of Brazil and into Venezuala is supposed to reach 30" but rarely exceeds 15" in captivity. The Black wolf that I have comm'd with other fish has come from Venezuala and a number of others who have done the same are also from that region. My second black was captured in brazil has a very different temperament and I would not cohab him with any thing.

Yes thats about right.

Unknown at the moment. as long as it is the right wolf then yes.

jumping: are black wolves known to be jumpers?

I personally haven't had any issues but that is no guarentee.

A couple of vids just to show the potencial size of these guys.

All wolves will break the surface for air however, some will simply gulp at the surface where others will leap out energetically.

Eitherway, any wolf keeper should make sure the lid is secure regardless of the species.

@Jelly, if you hear of a second Aimara, let me know. I'll make room for one..!

i thought the variants from brazil got much smaller than the ones in venezuala?
i think i remember seichii saying that, and he posted a very large venezualan black wolf.

anyways,to all of you,i say try it.
im dying to try it myself really, might even use my armatus money to get a black wolf instead....hmmm.

oh,and HKN has had black wolves (yeah, two of them i think),with other fishes.
theyre were the biggest,if not one of the biggest,in that tank.
