Maintenance will not go up from removing carbon. I dont use it but to remove meds. All it does is remove meds, and helps clear water. Your benificial bacteria removes ammonia, and nitrites. Your weekly water changes remove the nitrates. So nothing will really be any different.

oo i thought the carbon had something to do with all that but idk... ok on to the next ?... where bouts would i get a very large piece of mopani or whatever wood from... the tank is like 6 x 2 x 2.5 roughly n i want somethin that will basically span the whole tank. im not wanting a whole bunch of little pieces. so i need a big one but all the lfs round here got small ones and i cant find much online. and another thing... i work at westlake and we sell a big 2.5 cubic foot bag of spagnum brand peat moss... jw if thats gonna be ok to put it there to get more tannins.

One place i know if the top of my head online is (That fish place). Your lfs should be able to also order large pieces for you. Too bad your not in my area one of my lfs stocks large pieces 24"+ all the time but the pieces are $80-$100+. Not shure on the peat will have to let someone more experienced with it answer that one ive never used peat so i dont want to tell you wrong.

d,tank sm.jpggoup 1 sm.jpgwood will not release tannins for long. if you use peat, you had better pay very close to your water because it will effect your ph. peat must be changer frequently or the ph will rise again. I have wild discus in a "blackwater" tank without the blackwater. tannins are not harmful to any fish but are certainly not needed. blackwater is the location of certain fish and the waters are usually tannin rich. and no, you don't need carbon except for removing meds. carbon would also remove the tannins feom the wood or peat. you can also use the blackwater extract but with a large tank it would become expensive as you would have to replace it with each water change. here ia a pic of my tank. lost the tannins long ago even though there is a lot of wood.

Easiest way to make a blackwater tank is to get a bottle of Laquna Liquid Peat (made for ponds).
Easy to use and cheap. A 16.9 fl. oz. bottle treats 4,000 gallons.

I gotta be the one to say this I guess, but with that stocking you need to be doing 30-50% water changes once a week. Owning a fish tank is part of having a higher electricity and water bill. Its just how it goes. Carbon does nothing for ammonia, so you can take that out. Your Bio media if its healthy should be doing that. However with that big stocking list unless you have tons and tons (even then) you need to be doing weekly water changes to keep nitrates and nitrites down.

+1. If you can't afford the WC you can't afford the tank.

Idk what ur talking about... I can handle the water changes right now... I thought he was sayin increase the water changes... If I do that then it will become too much... But normal water changes are fine. So I dnt know where u got that I cant handle them right now.... Amd as far as the stocklist I dont think its that much... It will be when they full grown but they are still small right npw... N I took the parrots back, I lilethem om the store but lookin at them in the tank jus didnt look good. But I did get a free bout 8 inch sun / eclipse cat so if anyone has info on those thated be cool.... And I plann on gettin angelfish n that will prolly be it... Jw how many, thinking 8 but idk
