Bloated Pleco

I meant other fish, invertebrates, etc. which may not be able to handle the elevated temps.
 
Hi, I find feeding peas is a good way of preventing bloat. It does make them "go" so perhaps that might work for your Common. Just cook some ordinary frozen peas, take the outer skin off and they should really like them. All my fish like them and you can see the results quite quickly. Hope he gets better. :)
 
Can the whole tank be treated with epsom salt. I cannot catch the pleco to give him a bath. He does not look as bad this morning.

Whether or not you can epsom the whole tank depends on your reply to my previous question. What else is in the tank?

Anna you don't need to cook your peas if anything blanch them.
Anyway theres a lot of panic on this thread. Is the pleco acting normally can he swim without being inverted? eating normally?
even though the product says shrimp pellets what are the main ingrediants? Grain?

The first sign of 'bloat' is loss of appetite which is then followed by swelling of the abdomen, labored breathing, listlessness, reclusiveness, possible red striations on the body, and stringy white feces.

All of us in this hobby tend to over react and head for the medicine cabinet. Don't feed your pleco fo a couple of days and see if the swelling goes down on it's own? sometimes our best intentions lead to the fishes demise.

Sorry I have not updates the thread. I could not catch him to put him in a tank of his own, everytime I would go for him he would hide under the lava rock I have in the tank.

My LFS said it would be ok to treat the tank with epsom salt which I have done. He is still not eating but is swimming around most of the time, and his belly does appear to be going down even though I have not seen any poo.

I am going to keep a eye on him over the next couple of days but so far so good.
 
Checked on him this morning and his eyes appear to have sunk into his head alittle bit. The bloat has gone down even more.
