To answer your original question, this is normal cichlid behavior. Cichlid might dig for any number of reason or sometimes no reason at all. But usually this is spawning behavior. If there are no other CA Cichlids in the tank the Parrot might just be trying to make itself feel more at home.
 
i think the parrot is trying to get with the JD, i have a parrot and a JD and the JD just ignored it.

Pits are for the babies but they will spawn in pits, I have seen it.
