I have they can't close their mouths personally I think they look like a cartoon character and it's kind of funny. Also blood parrots are not aggressive at all at least in my experience so I definitely would not have them with those fish.

I think they look like a cartoon charactor too. My wife had one for a long time that dominated all the other cichlids in the tank. I wouldn't get one again just because I'm over it. Though he's frozen in our freezer right now after the tragedy of his death.

I think though if people are going to make fish in a lab they should try harder and be a little more creative. I'd like a mudskipper, fire eel, puffer, Jack Dempsey mix.

I've got a full size blood parrot housed with a jack dempsey, oscar, gold severum, syno cat, and 3 geophagus. They all get along just fine in a 125 gallon tank. The bp is the only full grown fish in there, but I've never seen any signs yet of aggression as the others age.

Just for the record, all parrots (orange, blue, green...) are dyed (as are many fish) unless they're clear/gray. Bubble gum is simply a more elaborate version. A shop near here actually has some baby parrots before they're died if you wanted one.

Originally, someone in Taiwan, I think, bred them and has made a fortune off them, for obvious reasons. They can't close their mouths because of the fact that they're genetically engineered, and that was part of the result, but so I read on wikipedia, they compensate for this by contracting their throat muscles.

I personally weigh moral decisions of this sort in suffering. If it is apparent that there isn't suffering, I don't see a problem with it. But either way, that's why some object, the decision is up to you.

Orange is a normal color for them & is not dyed. Green, blue, yellow, red & also tattoed, are dyed. The dyed ones are considerably weaker (fact) and more susceptible to disease (they've already been injected with communal needles probably carrying some kind of blood borne pathogen).

In response to the OP's Q: Parrot fish is in fact a hybrid. Most sources claim it is a cross from the Red devil cichlid and Gold severum. Many people have very bad opinions about hybrid species such as Parrot fish. They say breeders shouldn't fool around with nature and some people criticize it as being cruel because parrot fish have quite deformed bodies & mouths. The other big problem is with the "sweetheart" style of this fish. Their tails are chopped off at 1.5", to make them heart-shaped, which is just plain, cruel mutilation.

i love them the only ones i wont buy are the ones that had their tail cut to make them a heart shape and the ones that they dye its cruel and just immoral

I agree mutiliating is wrong, dyed or chopped, i wouldnt buy one

Three of my favorite fish are hybrids; Blood Parrot, Electric Blue Jack Dempsey, and Titanium Flowerhorn. They are cool looking and have far more personality and intelligence than all the other fish in my current collection.

An added benefit of a Blood Parrot is that they can be a center piece fish in a community tank; they are very docile.

Here is a picture of my BP in a 75G community tank.

The other picture is a group shot of my 3 parrots.
