Blood worms are breeding in my indoor pond!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They aren't mosquitoes, the adults don't bite me or anyone. I have also had a 500gph pump agitate the surface and they still kept at it.

Try hanging the little lamps that shock the bugs that land on it around the pond. It should reduce the amount of larvae because the parents/adults would be killed before they breed. Just a theory, sounds do-able

Yah I already run one of those for four hours each night. To bright to sleep with it on all night. It does cut the number of them back, but doesn't eliminate the little demons.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I hope I find a way to end the swarm. It all happened because I overfeed my fish live bloodworms one day. I have even emptied the pond and filter out and scrubbed/washed everything down with a hand towel and water and even had to recycle the pond and I still have them breeding in it.

Okay the the insect and larva I am fighting with are called midges but i dont know which species. They are the non biting kind at least.

At least they eat detritus.

Heres an internet pic of what I got midge larva/ bloodworms!

Here's a way to get rid of your blood worms: You will have to take all of your fish out of your pond though...

Also, depending what your filter is, you would want to take it off, or somehow block it off from the water in the tank.

Get yourself some Potassium Permanganate. (since there are no fish, you can add a large amount)- this will definitely kill your blood worms.

the water will be purple, and once it's worn off, the water will turn brown- You will want to heavily treat it (9 grams does 1500 gallons) and then for your filter (if they are in it) run some high salinity salt water through it.

If the water is still purple when you wish to add the fish, dump in 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide, get your air pumps going, and then you can add the fish.

wow. Thanks. It will be a chore though.

Orrrrr, you can scoop them out and send them to me! :)

Ya, I will treat the filter and decor and equipment with the permanganate when I switch tanks later this year. Netting my fish really stresses them out. I just wish my fish would eat the ones in the tank. The filter has them to but, still I wish they would get eaten. The worms range in size from less than 1 cm to an 1.5 inches at most.
