Bloodworm escaped

Whew, it sounds like everyone in this thread is talking about a different critter!

This may explain things a little:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloodworm

The thread-like bloodworms commonly used for fish food are the larvae of the midge, a insect that closely resembles the mosquito ( Chironomidae ). They are described here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chironomidae

Bloodworms are not mosquito larvae. I've collected bloodworms from a nasty creek below a sewage treatment plant many, many years ago when I was but a pup. It was nasty, but the fish loved 'em. I've also collected thousands upon thousands of mosquito larvae and closely observed them from hatchlings to pupae to adults. They are not the same! Midges look a lot like mosquitos but their larvae are quite different.

As for those nasty bloodworms that balton777 mentioned, well, I've never been around them and never want to be.

The confusion that 'common' names creates let's everyone be right and wrong at the same time. And none of these are redworms either!
