Hard to say. I have one small female around 2.5" that when I got it from my breeder friend new it was a female. My male and bigger female in the pictures came from him also. Mine have yet to spaw the only fish other than my small Hap. Flamebacks that have yet to do the deed my Male Fryeri is roughly 5.5" or so and the female about 4-4.5". Enjoy.

At 2" you can't quite be positive of differences. Females may have a blue sheen. Early developing males may start developing the intense blue color that early but they generally begin to color up at about 3".

Differences between S. fryeri and S. ahli are obvious when adult. When very small one may only notice a difference in body shape. Either way, only a small handful of people in the US have had the opportunity to keep the true S. ahli. ;)

Im breeding them now and the females are gray with lite black stripes. If you raise your water temp to about 82-84 they'll start to make babies. goodluck

the alpha male will keep the other males from coloring up,the female is a dull looking fish. good parents. i strip my fish of their egg's and fry.i use a home made tumbler for the egg's and hatch brim shirmp as their first food. easy to get them to breed.

great info guys! well i just went to the lfs and picked up a pair of blue ahlis. one is much more blue than the other and i feel fairly confident that i have a par. when i get pics i will post them. thanks again! -jordan
