I'm keeping some CA cichlids for the first time and I've since read here about a lot of hybrids being sold in the big chains.I've since noticed that my convicts have bright blue trim on their gill covers and anal fin.Is this natural or is it possible they aren't "pedigree"?sorry for the pics in advance(cellphone camera)

where did you get them from? personally I'd say they're probably hybrids. there are naturally occuring convicts that have a lot of blue color and there are also honduran red points, which some people believe are a variant of the convict while others believe them to be a separate species. either way, the blue morph convicts and honduran red points aren't all that common in lfs but honduran red point/convict hybrids are fairly common. they were crossed together because convicts have much larger spawns than HRP's so the farmers or whoever started hybridizing these fish wanted a convict with some of the blue color of the HRP but that would reproduce as rapidly as convicts. :)

Convict cichlid female, note the blue trim around the gill and anal fin he was talking about.

His fish...looking at the small photo looks just like a normal convict IMO.
