the term Central America refers to the countries from Guatemala and Belize south down to Panama. Mexico is not part of Central America which is I believe what he meant. However, that being the case then all cichlids from Mexico would be considered North American instead of Central American (see an incomplete list of cichlids native to Mexico here...http://www.cichlidae.com/gallery/country.php?id=MX). However, many of the cichlids that are natively found in Mexico also are natively found in surrounding countries so then labelling them as only North American would be incorrect. Also, the countries of Central America are technically part of North America (I slept through US History in high school so it's possible I also slept through Geography as well...I'm a math/science guy so if I'm wrong please correct me LOL) so in essence any cichlid from a Central American country could also be considered North American. However, most cichlid guys/gals simply refer to New World cichlids as being either Central American or South American, even the ones from Mexico and the US.
