2007 year for the villages of alaska.
again numbers arnt even close

ps i was off on numbers. they are allowed up to 56 whales apparently. still not even close to the japanese's 1000 whale quota

actually the alaskn natives are allowed to bring in, i beleve, only 6 whales a year. the japnese last year had a quota of 1000 whales. numbers arnt even close

The Alaskan hunts average around 50 whales a year, but it varies considerably from year to year. They took 63 in 2007.

The main differences between the Japanese and Norwegian whalers and the others (Greenland, Russia, U.S., Iceland, Indonesia, Faroe Islands) is that the Norwegians and Japanese do it on a considerably larger scale and they don't hunt under the pretense of native tradition.

killing marine mammals is just wrong.
although i agree with you, why only marine mammals? what about all the land mammals?

humanity as a whole tries to dictate what is right and what is wrong. can we justify a cow for a burger, shure why not. but if its cute or big or endangered its a big no-no.

rather than prevent extiction perhaps we should prevent endangerment before things get out of hand.

death to all till theres only 2 left, then lets make a big stink about it.

VERY good point. no one cares till something is wrong. and the thing with whales is as Far as I know there has never been a good census on them to get a population count b/c there habitat is so vast. we are still learning about them in the grand view of things.

and you don't see the same people shooting at damn builders when they build damns in the amazon.

Man.. thats quite a bit of damage to a very expensive craft.

Research.. yeah I don't buy that for a second.

I don't buy that you don't buy that it's for research.

The way I see things, if we don't understand a species, we shouldn't be wiping them out. There's so much we can learn from them while they're alive.

I hate dams! They're unsightly and mess up the natural flow of waterways, in turn throwing everything else off.

I don't think it was a stunt at all! Those guys are truly putting there lives on the line to try and stop the Japanese whaling efforts. This is just some of the aftermath. That's BS that they are trying to make it seem like the sea shepherd is out to harm innocent people. If those people are so innocent, then what are they doing on the ship in the first place. Knock em' dead

Wow thats alot of anti-whaler hatred! Im opposed to whaling but these whalers are 1) from a different culture, and 2) most of those guys are probably just trying to make a living.
In my opinion if anyone feels strongly enough to wish a group of people dead, they should sign up to do the killing. thats committment I can respect whether i agree with the cause or not.
These sea shepard guys are retards. How is the destruction of a high tech boat and the potential death of some tree huggers going to stop an industry. Their entire operation hinges upon getting themselves run over if not killed. To them this is a victory. Its not a well thought out attack. If they were serious about stopping whaling and not just about getting themselves on the news they would attack these vessels in port where they could really mess them up.

First off, their whaling in Australian waters. The Australian Whale Sanctuary to be exact. In this area it is illegal to even touch the cetaceans without a permit nonetheless kill them for large scale "research" fishing(as if research needs 2000 dead whales a year). Japan has fleets elsewhere in the Pacific, But this fleet is outright breaking international law and Australia is doing nothing about it.

Their just a bunch of greedy bastards, and the IWC needs to revise the "don't waste research catches" loophole.

Maybe in their culture they hunted whales... but I doubt in ancient times they had half a dozen factory ships going around with giant harpoons, slaughtering tons of whales.

I'm not a person against hunting. I believe that's how it is in nature, animal kills animal. But I"m against mass hunting and over hunting. C'mon people, be smart. Don't kill endangered animals. They should set limits on how many can be killed a year, and strictly enforce it.

I don't believe animals as intelligent as dolphins or primates should ever be hunted, however.

Different culture and trying to make a living have been use to justify some pretty vile ****. You sure you want to use that argument? Also are you suggesting that these people are so freaking stupid that whaling is the only job they are capable of. If they are in fact that dumb they shouldn't be contributing to the gene pool.

While I'd love to see the Sea Shepard equipped with ship killing hardware I can't see this working for very long. Making it public and creating a nuisance is usually far more effective than outright violence. Which tends to trigger more violence which is a generally bad idea when your enemy is better armed.
