Al - I didn't pay to inceesibly more then 1500 and that's seven years inflation....
Hopefully a few of you guys with pairs can get some pups available to us poor people!! Really is my dream ray!! I like how active they are. So far the best price I've come across is around $2000. Just a shade over what I can afford!
Even when people start breeding them more in the US, that doesn't mean pups magically become cheaper. Captive bred doesn't indicate cheaper fish, generally it means more expensive than wilds. Especially in the beginning. I don't think people fully understand what it takes to bring in a parasite infested wild species, rid it of the countless parasites, and raise it to breeding size. Especially on a species like boes. You have to respect that.
There's a few pregnant females in US now. Shark is right that they likely will cost more than the imported wild parents as they should. Easiest to break to new foods and healthy.
Outside of stillborn pups I've only lost one adult Ray and she was wild caught. They're much more temperamental and unstable.
In years the prices will come down but they'll have a price tag like high end BD's
Currently the market is so thirsty for boes that quality doesn't yet matter. Uglier specimens sell for top dollar like the elites ones.
BD's used to be this way too. But now the market for low grade and mid grade BD's has collapsed only 700-1200 USD but the AAA grade still sell for 3k+ easily
Rather than seeing the overall prices on boes fall I think you'll see ranking and grading systems develop. What the market deems as nice will retain or gain value, the more average specimens will slowly lose value and become more available at lower prices first.

Then shouldn't we at least have access to rare rays without having to have an import license?
Can't even get a nice Pearl here in the states, let alone any of the rare stuff - Snow Leopards, Falkneri, or Scobina....
