do you have a turtle in there??? how does that work? what kind is it?

lol how does that work? It is a red eared slider, about four years old. He has been living with fish for 3 years, but he chooses what fishes lives or dies, but is to lazy to chase the sunfish or catfish. Usually, after the first day, if he doesnt have a problem with it, then the fish will do fine in the tank. But one day when i placed a 5 inch chub in the tank, the next day it disapeared :irked:.

Do you find a lot of mud sunfish?

What other natives live around you? I'd be willing to pay for shipping or trade something if you have something of interest to me.

Well now its too cold, they are either in deeper waters or buried in the mud, but we have blue spotted, banded, and black banded sunfish. As well as pirate perch, pumpkinseeds, bluegills, bass, yellow and brown bullheads, tadpole madtom.

the reason i ask is my gf has turtles, and for a long time i thought it would be cool to keep them in my 180 with my natives. but someone told me that it could not be done....
i figured they were wrong, but who was i to argue....
my tank consists of bass, perch, walleye, pickerel, and a catfish, all around 8-10" ... she has 4 red eared sliders (about 4-6" across the shells) ... what do you think, maybe one or two of them be ok in there??

what about a heat lamp and place for the turtles to get above the surface???

Hmm, it would be a gamble. My turtle happen to be raised with the fish. If you pick the smallest turtle(s) then the better chance you have (assuming 4-6 inches is length, not width), and since the fish are bigger then turtle, it may not bother with them. One big issue is room. 180 gallon is a big tank, so unless there is alot of accessories the fish have room to swim away from a curious turtle.
If you really want to put the turtle in the tank, make sure its on a day you can keep an eye the tank, to make sure the turtle isnt terrorizing. Since it may take a few hours to get use to your tank. Then keep an eye on for few more days, chances are if the turtle doesnt bother with it the first day or two, it will leave the fish alone. I also have a musk turtle in my 10 gallon. They would be a more suitable tank mate, since they arent the best or quickest swimmers and are smaller.
Now for basking, i just kind of jammed a log or root structure thing into the corner (if you do this, be sure not to crack the glass), so it stays in place as it floats on the water. This way it can stay in place when the turtle climbs on it, or launches himself into the water. They also sell less aestheticly pleasing turtle ramps at petstores. Some people have made specialized canopy hoods, this way they can keep the water level to full height. But this is your choice. How big is the pickerel, since that could be one of the fish that could be bothered.
