Bottom Dweller Stock for 75 gallon Central/South American Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think your fully stocked with this list. If your going to try corries I’d suggest getting at least 2-4 more to round out the school.

I also think in order to succeed at fish keeping you should aim for a 75-80% stocking for the 75g (if this is your first real fish tank)

Sometimes as a newbie you think you can skip a water change and just top up your water as it evaporates and your tank looks fine and fish are great then maybe you get lazy or busy and miss another water change and before you know it your doing one small water change a month and wondering why your fish is sick.

I’m not trying to tell you what to do with your tank bc it’s your tank and ultimately you will decide what you put in it. I just like seeing people succeed and not just throw the towel in.
I get your concern but this is not my first tank, yet alone not technically my first 75. My Paps had a 75 and was lazy with water changes and the fish ended up getting ick and all dying. So i’ve learned the lesson from that and I plan on doing weekly 25% water changes. My only question is every week should i siphon the gravel during the 25% water change or should I siphon the gravel every other week? I know my tank is pretty stocked but since i’m cutting the GT from the list would getting a Elec Blue Acara really make that big of a difference? Or will this type of fish not thrive in the tank as I know it’s on the smaller side compared to the rest.

Just know that it could work out very well for you, or the cories could end up as lunch for the jd. Even then cories I believe have some kind of fin spikes they can open up to help prevent them from being swallowed and you could end up losing both fish.

If all raised together it might work even if it is something not recommended.
I also took this into consideration so I bought the biggest cory the store had. bigger than the dempsey i bought so hopefully the JD will grow used to the cory being around since day 1 and leave him alone

That’s pretty much the best you can hope for. This would be something I would try myself but not recommend to others haha...

I would up the weekly water changes to at least 50% (the 25% might be ok while they are small) but when they are all full grown I don’t think 25% will cut it. However, it might be enough for your tank depending on your feeding schedule. You would have to continuously check your water parameter until all fish are adults and you have your water change route down. Even then it doesn’t hurt to test water every now and again.water changes are not really something someone can tell you to do on a specific day (unless you have the nitrate reading) but pretty much you should be aiming for less than 20ppm of nitrates.

The reason I also suggested 50% water changes is bc for every 50% of water you remove from the tank you also take 50% of the nitrates out with it....with only a 25% water change schedule you have the potential for nitrates slowly creep up in your tank and slowly cause problems

An eba may be on the mellow side for your other fish maybe a regular blue acara. Preferrably male
I never knew Normal blue acara existed. lookes like a hybrid between a GT and JD. never seen them in stores only eba’s.

You said 25% weekly could work depending on my feeding schedule. What would you recommend. I normally feed once daily and let them fast 1 day a week to help with digestion

I recommend 50% weekly with daily feedings...again though you’d want to let your test results tell you when it’s time for a water change.

50% is always my baseline and recommended water change schedule. I personally don’t test my water very often but I do maintain a 90% water change weekly. I do heavey/ish feedings and I’m moderately stocked without being overstocked
