Bottom Dweller Stock for 75 gallon Central/South American Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tanks got plenty of current and Nitrates are only at 5ppm, so what could cause the algae if those aren’t the problems?

On a side note, I just added a Jewel, JD, and Cory to my tank, and the ammonia spiked up to .25-.50ppm today when I tested. I’m planning on doing daily 50% water changes to get it down, but I have a question about dosing seachem prime. Should I dose just for the 50% volume of water I change, or should I always dose for the full volume of the tank (75g)?

Could be phosphates or silica.

So there’s nothing i can do to fix it other than scrub the decor down when doing water changes? And for the prime dosing should I just dose for 75g after I complete the water change?

What ur doing is something to fix it. Can always add a bristlenose pleco if u can keep ur nitrates down like ur doing. Dose to the 75g aquarium size is fine.

Sounds good. How soon can I test the water again for ammonia after the 50% change and after dosing with prime

Would recheck in a bit after 2 days. Prime has a false positive with ammonia upto 48hrs.

Ah well I guess the website I looked was lying to me because I read prime was one of the only conditioners that didn’t have a false positive for ammonia when tested. I have 3 more cichlids I need for the tank you think I should get them once I get the ammonia back down to 0? Told the fish store I’d be in tomorrow to get them (Put a few specific ones on hold, far better looking than the others) but I guess I’ll have to wait

Would wait till the tank is fully cycled.

That’s similar to a mini cycle, the original amount of bb in your filter was enough for the amount of waste your original fish were producing. Now with larger fish creating more waste your bb colonies are not big enough to hand the additional waste being created, hence why you have seen a spike in ammonia. It could take a weeknor two for you bb to catch up to the new bio load. I would hold off as long as you can to get new fish.

Or if you don’t want to wait go get the fish and do daily 50% water changes until you get constant 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite readings.
