You say "for the past while he's been losing his appatite" how long is the past while? Does it have any corralation with the intro of the Jags? That has been your GT's tank for a year and now you upset the order of things. IMO 2 Jags and a GT in a 130 is alot. If there is a corralation between the intro of the Jags and the GT's odd behavior he is either stressed of trying to assert dominance. I would put him in his own tank and watch him if he's sick you probelbly just transmitted it to the Jags if he's not then the envoronment is no longer to hes liking. Is he still top dog or is there any fighting over turf going on?

:iagree:

He lived alone for a year then you put these new young jags in and his whole world is tuned upside down. Big change can cause big stress.

No this started before i introduced the jags, hes got no problem with them, they never fight he will just chase them away if they come into his territory. As for the tanks, He was in a 50g for 1 year, then i bought 130g which i put him into about 1 month ago.

I totally agree with this post. I stand by my claim that a GT can't and won't be able to hang with those fish. Move him soon.

If he's trying to eat and spitting out the food it would lead me to think it's an intestinal issue. GT's don't do so well on a very high protein diet and can develop Hexamita intestinalis pretty easily. A big factor for it is stress, which adding more fish can definitely do. Did you by chance see what sort of feces he was passing a week ago or so? White and stringy are signs of an out of control infection. I've had fish act very hungry and beg at the glass and then spit the food out due to infection.

Metronidazole and Epsom salts are a good treatment. Most people say the fish has to ingest the metro, but I've had success with just treating the water and Epsom salts when the fish is so far gone to not be eating.

I actually have the same issue right now as my little male GT was gorging on the very small high protein pellets I put in for the convicts. :(

Also he dident live totally alone in his other tank. He had a smaller female with him for awhile and after that, he had a smaller 2 inch fish with him(cant remember what its called)

You say he acted a little differant before the jags. He might have been fighting a bactirea infection and kept it under control with his immune system so it never got that bad . Now with the added stress of other fish in his tank the infection has gotten stronger and his immune system can no longer keep it in check. It would be best to move him and watch him. It could be an infection. Maybe he has something stuck in his mouth have you looked?

Just because you don't see them fight does not mean he is not feeling stressed.

OK we all agree, seperate him or them and see what happens.

So if I now understand correctly you took him out of his 50 and moved him into a new 130 with 2 jags, is that right?

A 130gal (I assume 72X18 footprint) is not overstocked for an 8" GT and two 4" Jags (although it would be in the future).
As others have noted he may be stressed from the new social interactions however.
What kind of structure do you have in the tank?
Maybe adding a lot of wood etc. for more hiding places would make him feel more secure?

Burt :)

Yes from 50 to 130 but i added the jags only 1 week ago so they are new. The gt has been in the 130 for a month now. I have lots of driftwood and hiding places, black substrate, couple fake plants. I could seperate him but only have 2 20g tanks, i got rid of the 50g cuz i have no room.
