Substrate or bare bottom? Cycled? Filtration?

For treating an infection, yes. If the tank is cycled and properly filtered. I like a bare bottom approach for a hospital tank, makes daily cleanings easier.

Ideally I'd have a bare bottom cycled set up with water from the main tank to minimize stress.
I agree again. I keep my GT in a 55 by himself,so treating the tank was not a problem. Metro did not stain the water or the silicone. Do you have a cycled filter you can put on the 20 gallon tank? If you do,put the filter on, and fill the tank with water from your 130. Keeping a smaller filter on your main tank is a good idea for when you need a hospital tank. You just move the filter on to the smaller tank, and instant cycle.

Oh. These people think the white poo/starvation syndrome can be cured. How cute. Go ahead. Hit him with metro, prazi and clout. Drown him in formeldahyde, salt and any combination of temperature and nutrient dosing you like. It's kind of a game to see how much money you will blow trying to save the fish.

Your GT will begin to shrink. At first he will refuse all food and seem to be heading straight for the grave. Then, after a few weeks, he will eat something to provide you with false hope. Then, after months and months of starving and shrinking, you'll either euthanize him in pity or he will die. That is the joy of keeping GT's. Welcome to the club.
P.S. Mine liked earthworms for awhile. Of course, he eventually gave up those too and lived on a steady diet of nothing.

Mine has grown, gotten more color, and is more active than it has ever been. Only cost me 10 bucks for the metro. This was 3 or 4 months ago.

Earthworms huh? High in protein. Not good for a GT.

if you wanna keep gt's healthy feed them peas a few times a week. but once they get the white stringy poo it is hard to cure. gt's really should not be kept with carniverous fish. qt the fish and treat with metro.

It was better than the other food he was preferring...nothing. Not crickets. mealworms, algae, seaweed, scuds/shrimp, various prepared foods, frozen bloodworms, canned peas soaked in garlic... Rest assured, I did try everything I could get my hands on. I'd get windows of good health after treating. I even tried higher doses and longer courses. But the white poo and food refusal always came back within a few days. :(

I hope you can bring your GT around though, they are amazing fish when healthy.

Festae and motas are not GT's. I've cured plenty of parasites in angelfish and anabantoids. Something is different about the GT group. They seem less willing to fight for life. Epsom salt sounds like a good idea, as do all parasite meds. Best of luck, again.
