Bowfin...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have one, hes grown about an inch in about a week and a half. I hand feed him everyday along with all my other fish. I am going to make a new youtube video of them after next thursday (end of summer classes). But my tank is an open top, only thing that has jumped out so far is a blue gourmai. He mainly stays towards the bottom, but if he eats too much he goes up for a breath of air every once and awhile. Right now his colors are awesome also! Red fins, and camo looking green scales. Hes feeding on bloodworms and shrimp currently.

its in a 55g right now, but i plan to get a 210-300 gallon tank this fall, once i find an acrylic one for a decent price. here is a vid of the tank.

the bowfin loves the java fern bunch and if threatened will shoot like bullet into it at full speed. so i recommend so obctacles like driftwood and grassy cover (java fern or vals or something).

mine is active, except after i feed him and he gets really really full, then hes lazy, just like me after thanksgiving dinner haha

I have 6 where i work, dont worry we have all the papers for them. They are all 2ft plus . No pics they are at the bottom of a 400 vat. We have a filter to make sure no eggs ever escape if they were ever to breed (unlikely)

I would advise you to cover your tank. I don't have much experience with bowfins but I've kept similiar air breathers and they are all excellent jumpers.

cover is important one of mine jumped trying kill feeders and had the netting off by accident, grabbing a 30" bowfin is not fun. You suddenly realise the size of their teeth.
