Bowfin

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There was a tank full of them at the MFK meet at That Fish Place last April so that time of year may be your best bet at getting a small one to start off with.

April's when I start seeing neonates here in TN, so there are probably plenty of good-sized juveniles in Florida and Louisiana by then. I'd offer to catch some for anyone who wanted them if my state laws didn't prohibit me.

I like them and should have gotten a few when I saw them.

They're up in the Delmarva and parts of NJ. I don't know what the laws are in those states but you might look into snagging some wild ones in the spring.

North American Prehistoric fish for EVAR.

Best bet is to catch some juvies in a minnow trap... they'll be going after the minnows :-)

Bowfin are obligatory air breathers and a minnow trap will kill them unless they have access to the surface. Young bowfin appear insectivorous in any case.

Dont laugh but what is Delmarva and EVAR? I do have a cast net and I think they are also in my state as well so this may be a project in the spring.I dont think our laws are as opressive as those in Jersey.

Then I mayhave to wait untill ThatFishPlace gets them in again.
