Nice, I have been looking for some for awile myself. Kills me that such a common fish is so hard to get. Where about are you located? I wish I could find some here in IL / NW Indiana.
Northern MI
People around here just kill them just to kill them, claiming they eat all the other fish. (Idiots)
I fish an area which has alot, but I catch 15 Pike to every one Bowfin.
Like yesterday, I caught 5 Pike, 5 Crappie, 1 Bass, 1 Bullhead and 1 Sunfish, not 1 Bowfin, yet supposedly they eat everything.
I have talked to the DNR and well, they are idiots too.
Some people do eat them, but most go on rumors, not even something they have heard from someone who has actually tried them.
I have talked to a few people who actually eat them and the meat gets mushy if you dont either keep the fish alive, chilled or clean it quickly and chill the filets right away before frying, I guess they have a very fishy taste too, if you dont soak them for a couple hours or more.
I plan on trying them some day, I guess they are pretty meaty, I know they fight like mad and are pretty stout 3 footers are pretty common, the average is 2ft though
