The fishes posted were bought from Don about 7 years ago. The ones with the red were about 3" and all looked alike. The blue adult was about 7-8". But to his credit, I believe there is some confusion as to what cichlid was originally described as guttulatus in the nomenclature
Don't get me wrong, I think Don is a great source for cichlids. I have a friend that visits Don often and grabs some fantastic species that he shares with me.
BobP, I get the impression there seems to be little, if any, question that remains about what is or is not Paratheraps guttulatus. At least no more so than other Paratheraps or Vieja. Conkel began collecting them about 1995(?) and has distributed three (i think) different populations since then. The differences in the three races is subtle. The wild Rio Mosanito is my personal favorite, and I am breeding them pure. It's nice to see what they look like in full dress. The females, particularly, are really something when breeding. Here is one of my girls, with babies, photo taken today:

The males, OTOH, look good both when breeding and when not. Her boyfriend:

If you've seen my other photos posted here, he takes more maroon on the head and much less of the lime green when breeding. Unfortunately, some or most of the lime also disappears with age on males. Below is a shot of the two of them together today - too much flash and before I cleaned the glass:
