South Central...
Here's the reptile that started it all for me. I got my first box turtle when I was 7 and I've been hooked on reptiles ever since. These are my two girls, Sparky (first 3 pics) who I've had for 18 years and Chip (last 2 pics) who I've had for 17 years. Over the years I've hatched a lot of eggs from these two. I released the babies into the woods behind my house growing up. The cage they are in is sort of falling apart and that is why I don't have my male box turtle anymore (escaped). In a couple of weeks I'm building them a new, bigger outdoor pen so I'll keep you guys posted.

nice looking box turtles...i like the yellow it is so vibrant...how long do they hibernate if at all...

Their hibernating length depends on the weather. If we have a mild winter/fall like this year, they hibernate less. I believe they hibernated from late September to early April this year. Some people bring them indoors in the winter but I don't like to do that. If I find another male, I'll try to breed them again. I don't like to take turtles from the wild anymore, but I know an area about 10 miles from my house that has a lot of these guys.

vicious,

Please dont take any wild ones, I dont want to see ya get in trouble. They are protected here now. Which i am so happy about!!!! Great turtles man nice color. I also keep turtles and tortioses too alot of mine are rescues from people who dont know how to keep them. I'll have to post some pics.

Hey stonecat, do you have a male you want to get rid of? I used to nurse hit box and water turtles back to health too. I didn't know they are protected, but that doesn't suprise me at all. Too many idiots take them home and kill them after a few months. Thats why I breed them to release them back to the wild. My girls have had a lot of babies over the years. When you think about it, what are the chances that a male and female box turtle will come aross each other in the wild? I mean they could be in some thick brush a few yards away and never know the other is there. Thats probably why the females can store sperm for a couple of years so they can lay a couple clutches of eggs. Anyways, if you're familar with NW Perry County, you still can fine lots of them after a rainstorm on some of the remote logging roads.

If I would have been on this site last year i could have given you a male, My brother and i had three that were hit and run victims. Two males and a female. The female could not be saved, her shell was cracked so badly that it wouldnt heal and she wouldnt eat. The two males we were able to fix and raise to healthy condition. The one male still lives around the house somewere if i find him i will pm you. We should get together for a turtle hunt sometime. I take photos of spotted turtles every year in pine grove state park, I know of some remote vernal ponds that have a good bit of turtles.

Bummer, I really would like to find a new male. 2 years ago I saved a snapper and a wood turtle, both hit by cars. They both did great and I was able to release both. Yeah I've been out that way before with a group looking for bog turtles in Mt. Holly. I've never seen a wild spotted before, I'd love to tag along. They're really neat little turtles, but not very common.
