I recently rescued a cute little fluffy dog, that must have been abandoned. It's a really really nice dog, but gets over excited and lairy with bigger dogs, starts jumping up and cuffing them etc. I have to pick it up to prevent fights. It also demands constant attention and playing, so soon I would like to buy it a companion.

I want to buy a bigger, tougher dog that can protect it, so I don't have to worry and can let them off the leash etc in public.

I was thinking of a boxer, I think they look beautiful, but I also hear they are very charming and amusing dogs.

My question is - how tough are they? How would they fair against a doberman, alsation - something like that? They look tougher, but I don't know a lot about them.

we had a boxer when I was real young. My parents had it before I was born and it was really protective over my sister and I. When ever people would come over our house the dog would stand between them and my sister and I. He was sooo protective that he killed a golden retriever that was bigger than he was. The golden retriver came onto our property and tried to bite my sister. The boxer (Max) tour apart the golden retriver sooo badly that the police took our dog max away and put him to sleep. It was the coolest dog in the world and when I have kids I'm getting one because there ain't nobody that can touch your kids if you have one.

Your dog should not be allowed off leash in public if it's going to attack other dogs. Getting another more powerful dog just compuonds the problem. You should take the dog you have to a shelter because you do not seem to have the required responsibility to own one.

guinness - shut the **** up you idiot. The dog is incredibly good natured, not aggressive at all, it simply doesn't know how to interact with other dogs.

In all likelyhood it was an abandoned watchdog, so it's had no training or socialisation.

It runs up to other dogs in a WAY over the top playful/friendly manner, and starts furiously sniffing them, jumping up and cuffing them etc. Some dogs take it the wrong way.

There are also many stray dogs here in Spain, a stray alsation tried to chase my dog yesterday and I had to fend it off.

And I walk it on deserted beaches and rivers near here.

When did I say it attacks other dogs? I said it gets lairy, not attacks.

And my desire to buy another dog is not just as a guardian, but as a companion. This dog wants to play 24/7, if I had a friend for it it would reduce my time needed to play with it.

happy mud skipper - thanks for the input amigo, it's very sad about your dog. Couldn't a case be made that the other dog was trespassing and it was trying to protect your sister?

boxers sound like cool dogs.

cheers! good rebutal rumblesushi!

I believe our entire nieghborhood didn't wan't a dog that vicious. So between our nieghbors complaining and dog parts being bagged (results of the dead retriever) in the backyard by animal control, my parents really had no choice but to give the dog to the police. The police took him to the Humain Society where he was put to sleep. My parents also didn't want a dog that vicious too i guess. But it was saddess day in my life when the officers took him away.

Hey rumblesushi who's to say that any big dog you get to protect your little dog would not take his actions the wrong way and go after him.

Because i would get it as a puppy, and it would get used to my dog's frantic playing before growing into a dog. If domesticated and trained, big dogs are usually fine with small dogs. Big dogs seem to be more territorial and defensive with other big dogs.

You sure you had a boxer (pure bread) ? Sound like the action of a pitbull or another mix....boxers really arent like that and they are small 70 lbs and less (unless over weight)....dont get me wrong they will fight to protect, but nasty like that usually no....

They are great family dog - and very sensitive to loud voices
