Boxer dogs - how tough are they?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is a very touchy subject for me. I own a pit bull. He's very good with other animals, but if I'm walking my dog on a leash, and another dog comes up to us and gets hurt because my dog saw it as a threat to me, the newspaper reads "Another pit bull attack, ban the breed." The headlines read the same for those who have them and don't control them in public places, obedience train, and socialize them. I was probably harsh because I didn't translate lairy and cuffing correctly. I do firmly believe that when in public, your dogs should remain under your control. From the post, this didn't seem to be the case. If you do keep your dogs under control, I apologize. Wether your dog starts a fight intentionally or not is irrelivent. If he is the instigator, you are responsible.

P.S. I did not mean to offend to such a degree, this subject just gets me going real fast.

The problem with the breed is they have a very natural instinct to go after other dogs, small kids, etc...which we see in the news all the time. The other problem is you can raise them from a pup and do all the social obedience training and socialing in the world, you can never put your guard down with these guys- not ever....all it takes is for them to forget what they learned even when its unprovoked and then you have a problem. Its the breed, and temperment which has been bread into them. Its not to say most make it through life without incident because the owner raised it in a healthy way. All and all you can turn any great dog into sh*% if its not raised correctly, and even if you raise a great dog (any dog) and did all the right things with it, it can still screw up. The only thing different with Pits and rotties, is the odds for them screwing up are higher coupled with their very powerful bite (down pressure is legendary) and it turns into a dangerous combo.
I have tried in the past to raise them and usually found untrustworthy quirks, that I wasnt comfortable with them. Its not like I didnt try, and I decided it wasnt worth the risk. I now have a huge english mastiff that I rescued at about 8 months of age( now 5 years old I think because his age isnt documented because of a rescue)). Talk about the strongest dog breed in the world - he bit a fully inflated soccer ball and popped it before I could do or say anything about it - but he did it by accident. He would let you take his toys from him and be ok. I never got that from the Pit, always thought I was about to get bitten with no warning. With my Mastiff and Lab there is always a warning if they dont like what you are doing. They will stay put and not chase after a dog or person if they get out - that would never happen with a Pit, Rottie maybe, but Pit no in my opinion. I never bindly trust my dogs around kids or others - they are animals and can do unpredicatable things.

Anyway what really brings bad press to the Pits and rotties are mainly the people who care for them. They wind up in the hands of folks who cant even take care of themselves -nevermind and animal. So the animal suffers

They're not tough, but tough looking. In my 13 years as a garbage man I never met an unfriendly boxer. In fact I want one. They are 'active' dogs and need plenty of exercise but they are smart and friendly toward other dogs and people.
Pit bulls- on the other hand- should be killed because they are smart- Can be friendly toward those they do not consider a threat- and are bred to kill those that they - Not their owners- consider a threat. They are extremely competitve, and are born to win. Wether it's against a jack chihuaha or an 8 year old child, they are bred to win. We are in charge. In my opinion the pit bull breed should be eliminated.
I don't see the the police using pit bulls. Do you? There's a good reason.
Get a boxer if you have the room and the time. They're great. I want one but I have enough mutsbright now. Here's one...

Fair enough, but don't jump to conclusions and be so quick to judge.

Quite simply, I rescued a cute little fluffy puppy dog, and he's a bit over excited with other dogs - not aggressive in the slightest. He simply needs a bit of training, he's probably never had any training at all, just been neglected on a chain in a garden.

And I never let it off the leash in public, only on deserted beaches and rivers.

I also think some of you don't understand what spain is like. The reason I am nervous about taking this dog for a walk is there any many stray and wild dogs here. Wild dogs in the fields etc, and nasty stray dogs just walking about. This dog doesn't sense danger, and would happilly bound up to a stray, snarling bull mastiff.

Yesterday I had to fend off a wild alsation that ran at us.

That's why I want a big tough dog for protection.

Like I said, don't be so quick to judge. I've been an animal lover all my life, I rescued an abandoned little dog, I'm treating it very well, doing my best to train it - you had no right to come here and call me irresponsible and say I should take this dog to a shelter. For a start, this dog wouldn't go to a better home than me, and there aren't even any shelters here.

Thanks very much for the input everyone.

Ducati and Stotty - that's a shame about boxers being short lived. I didn't realize that, this page states 11-14 years.

It's interesting though that on the whole, small dogs live longer than large dogs - Why do you think that is?

Marlboro - that dog is beautiful. I was reading about wolf hybrids the other day. What exactly IS a wolf hybrid? What is the wolf bred with? And how do they just take a wild wolf and breed it with a dog?

I've always loved the wolf's characteristics, but I thought a wolf hybrid would be too dangerous and unpredictable.

What exactly is the breed you showed? Looks like a cross between a wolf and an akita :)

We had a coyote/dog mutt of some sort, but it couldnt be trusted:(
Very friendly to people, but attacked anything else.

A vet told me small dogs in general live more years than big dogs. Also female dogs tend to live more than male dogs, and dogs that live outside live less than dogs that are kept in a home with us. It’s to do with Metabolic theory (I think look it up its way over my head)

How about a Staffordshire bull terrier 2 of my Friends have them related to the Pit but these dogs are great with people and kids this is my boy with Tie he is 8months old and a really nice dog. But then again I would have a cross I have always had crosses they have less problems and my friend with the Boxer has found this out at the loss of 2 loved dogs. Now here is the punch that staff is not 100% mum was staff dad was well staff Jack Russell:screwy:
