Brachyplatystoma juruense

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a 6" Juruense catfish. The previous owner got him at 3" and sold him to me at 6". When he was young, he would sit perched on a large Anubias leaf all day and wouldn't eat until the owner turned the lights off. He was very peaceful and calm.

When I got him, he would perch himself on a large rock and sit facing the powerhead with his whiskers spread out waiting for food to come by. He never caused any problems and never swam into the glass. However, when I redecorated the tank and the perch disappeared, he spent a fair amount of time swimming up the glass. I've seen them do this in LFS too and it appears to be because they need to have places to perch themselves during the day.

Mine eventually died of a really bad case of velvet that got under his skin.

I do not have any experience with anything bigger than juveniles. They are beautiful fish (much nicer than Tigs IMO), but the eventual adult size is more than my 165 could handle.

No idea what a flash Zebra is, as well as a spotted.

But Juruense catfish are piscivores, not bottom feeders.

Flash Zebras get much larger than Juruense and get a bit larger than Tigrinus so don't get one of those, you never can find them anyway. I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as a spotted since I've never seen or heard of one before. I had mine with a Barracuda and 6 silver dollars which were fine, but I would not recommend Payara with them since they have such large jaws and Juruense are very skinny and easily eaten, if you get a Juruense I would suggest a large one.

max size is around 12-14"

This is not true. Brachyplatystoma Juruense and Brachyplatystoma sp.
"Flash Tiger" get to similar max sizes between 24-30"

They grow about 1" a month if you're feeding heavily so slower than TSN but similar to Tigrinus or Goslinea if fed properly.

The tail streamers could be bit off by other fish but they will also disappear if you have poor water quality, they will start to rot away just like the Juruense whiskers if the water quality is bad.

Where the heck could someone find a large specimen(Juruense) 8"+

There are a few vendors that bring them in at that size or larger (12-14") ECZS on the other forum has them in those sizes frequently they run about $200-$250 for 12"+
