Brachyplatystoma juruense

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im sorry yes I did, I currently have it is a 10 gallon completely seperated right now, The tail is completely bit off and only has a regular tail. My LFS had them with
convicts and convictxflowerhorn youngsters.
So far its completely stressed but I think all will be well I am not medicating at all.
But time will tell and I havent tried feeding yet but I did bring it home yesterday
I am waiting for it to adjust plus recover a bit,

Congrats on your new purchase.

These are truly stunning catfish, one of my favorites, Im lucky enough to have 2.
As already mentioned here they like big aquaria, with excellent filtration & plenty of water movement.
Tank should be furnished with large pices of Bogwood & large flat rocks as they generally sit upright rather than hide.
Tankmates should be as docile as possible but at the same time be able to look after themselves.
They are easily stressed & startled.
Jurense get territorial as they get bigger and usually wont tolerete other Brachplatystoma species such as Tigrinnus, other Jurense etc
Tankmates must be picked with care as they don't like their tail fimanents nipped & neither do they like fast moving housemates.
I've sucessfully kept mine either by themselves or with Oscars but this has been in Big Aquairia i.e 130 Gallons plus +

Why are you sorry? You saved him from those little demons! :D When I put my Juruense in my tank last week after getting him in the mail my Red Texas tore off his tail completely, chipped his gill plate, and tore off his side fins. But now he is healing at an amazing rate. Don't use salt as catfish are very sensitive to salt and their skin will start falling off. When I made my thread asking for help as to how to heal my Juruense I was told just to keep the water clean. I got rid of the Red Texas and the 6 Silver Dollars that were in my tank and got a yellow Tail Barracuda which is much more peaceful and I think they are buddies :D Good luck with your new cat!

Thank You, overall this guy will be going into a 110 gallon with a 8 jewel cichlids, and
two discus, I dont know the exact word im looking for, but when I say his injury was
to his back fin, The only real damage was the long lash which was completely removed.
But even still two days later I can already see one that is no longer a open wound and two its starting to get a point again, which im very excited about, today we were a little successful with blood wors, but even still nothing was eaten until it was completely dark in the room and the tank lights were off. I imagine it will be pretty shy overall until its a little bigger, the only tank mate with it now is a 2'' rubber lip pleco and it already chases it away from the malaysian drift wood, its makes a hole directly under the wood and buries itself somewhat into the gravel and just keeps its head poked out. Mine is almost completely black you can see stripes but they are very faint. Do you normally lighten up or darken with age and size?

Yeah sounds like they ate his streamers, feeders occasionally do that to mine but I take them out before they do any real damage. Mine would not eat until it was pitch black and I was asleep which is normal since they are nocturnal feeders. They are skittish until they get a little bigger. Some of them have stripes you can see clearly like mine or some might be pitch black like yours, I'm pretty sure they lighten up after getting comfortable. Again I would not recommend any cichlids or things like discus if you want a perfect specimen Juruense.

Awesome cat and one of my personal favorites. They love to eat and grow at a pretty decent rate-not too crazy.Mine used to eat from my hands believe it or not.I got it at about the size you are referring to and it had to actually be hand fed as a baby. Not sure if it's eyes were too good? But it would always hang out in the back of the lip to my AC110 and liked the current I guess but wouldn't move around all that much.So I began reaching under with a spoon or a syringe at first to feed it until one day I didn't have either handy and fed it right out of my fingers. It continued to eat that way after that.I was feeding thawed blood worm until it grew larger and then it readily accepted all kinds of pellet and krill, earthworm etc.Your only issue would be to get it eating.they can be picky when small but bloodworm is loved by all fish.If possible ask what it is eating and see if you can watch it eat.$25 is a good price also.
