Brackish Water Questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
NO, African rift cichlids are not BW fish. I've alreay explained the difference. A few tablespoons of plain salt, does not BW make. You cannot judge stocking by what a LFS keeps in their tanks--those are only holding tanks for selling the fish, not their permanant homes. Usually extremely overstocked too.

Well I wanna try having brackish water fish . I wanna convert my 30 gallon freswater tank into a Brackish tank.

I read the thread about "Brackish Water Setup". So I need marine salt and a Hydrometer I think....To measure the Specific Gravity of the water..Right?

Now I still have left over from 3 years ago in a bucket, Crushed coral substrate as well as Whole Corals (about 3 of them) , can I use that as my substrate in a brackish water tank? Does Crushed coral lose its function after a while or is it still a good buffer?

If crushed coral is an absolutely horrible idea! Whats my other alternative ? Sand?

Can I keep my same filter for a brackish water tank? Its a hang on Penguin 125 for a 30 gallon tank? Or should i pull out of the closet the Emperor 400  ....It might be too much filtration and suck in the fish lol:ROFL:

When you swtich from Freshwater to Brackish, do you need to recycle? Or is my beneficial bacteria still around?

I think I need a heater because they like warm temperatures right?

Keeping pH high shouldnt be a problem if my substrate buffer maintains it right?

Does the marine salt raise the pH automatically? Or is there something that needs to be added to the water in order to raise pH?

Sorry for being such a pain in the butt with these newbie questions, but I wanna do things right and not look like an idiot box making threads asking questions like "Why did my fish die!":screwy::grinno:

I rather ask the experts here on MFK which is you guys!

So whats in the shopping bag lol ....a Hydrometer, Marine Salt, possibly new substrate ?? Anything else?

Thanks
Manny

I would rinse your CC in very hot water & reuse. Everything else you have posted looks good. What were you looking to keep in there? Do you know how to fishleess cycle? I'd find out what SG the fisn you are interested in are being kept at the shop & cycle at that SG (usually FW).

Im not saying this because I wanna fit in or anything but I happen to like Puffers. From the little research I did, I just realized that there are so many puffer species out there and they mostly all look alike and yet they all have different aggressions and different water requirements , some are fresh water and some are brackish water.

Well....I am looking for a Brackish water puffer that can get along with other puffers and wont kill one another....Is this possible or utopian? If so which species lol

You could keep 2 figure 8 puffers in that tank & maybe a few other BW fish like knight gobies or mollies.

Here's my article on them: http://www.**************.com/forum...cus/an-introduction-to-green-spotted-puffers/

Hey very nice article!!!! I enjoyed it and it was very educational. Ok so the cute little guys are out of the question

So figure eight puffers are the way to go.... So I guess my first initial step is gonna be to buy the equipment and wash out that old CC and get all my resources ready to start up the BW tank.

You didnt answer my question earlier about the beneficial bacteria...Will the BB carry over from my freshwater set up into the BW set up? Or will I have to start over even though im using the same filter that has the BB already in it???

Since it is highly doubtful you will find F8s in BW at most stores, you can place them into a FW tank & them raise the SG .001/week, until you reach the desired SG of 1.005. I just published an article on F8s in FAMA this month. We should be able to posat it at TPF any day now.

Please explain where you are getting this bacteria for your filter?

Isnt the beneficial bacteria already present in the filter?
