Brand new 700 something Gal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My old sump was an 8x2x2 which is now on a tank this size.
But I wanted everything to be new on this build.
So I then I got the 6x2x2 for mechanical section of the sump.
I then put some tape on the sides as to where I thought I would put the dividers.
Once that was done I then measured the glass and got it cut and silicone it in.

So the water flows out of the K1 tank and into the first section.
I have Dacron in the top of each section which is working a treat.
Water seems to be staying solid free.

So it was plumbing time.
All 40 mm pipe for drains.
Also 40mm pipe for the start of the fill then branched off into 25mm pipes.
So from the pump I have some of the water going through a uv filter and the rest going straight to the tank.
Bit hard to see from the pics.

Great looking sumps!
But it would have made more sense for the mechanical to be first....then into the k1.
Can you explain why you did it the other way so we can understand your madness?

Agree about having the K1 after the mechanical, but otherwise it looks great! What are the reactors/canisters on the back in the last pic?

From my understanding, one of nice things about K1, is that as long as you have it in a moving bed filter, the K1 will clean itself. So having it before or after the mechanical won't make much of a difference.

Sorry been side tracked.
The way I looked at it was....
The K1 would be the best media in my sump for surface area and self cleaning.
The water coming out of the tank would obviously be the dirtiest.
So I have the most polluted water going to my best filter media to get the water in tip top shape.
Then it is basically the solids that the second sump takes care of as well as more biological filtration.
Does that make any sense ??

So for the pump I went with a Laguna 10600.
It has some very nice pressure and turn over is great.
I went with it cause I have had a laguna on one of my racks for a while now and its still going strong.

Then for heating I went with a schego 600watt and 300watt heater.
I'm finding the metal to water contact way better than the usual glass to water.

So it was decisions as to what the scape was going to be.
Obviously with a tank this size I wanted open swimming area for the fish so it was going to be simple and minimal.
So I decided on black gravel and some sandstone rocks and a couple of fake plants.
I put down 2 sheets of egg crate to disperse the weight of the bigger rocks.
Then washed the black gravel many times till I was happy with how clean I got it.
