Brazil IBAMA Stingray Export Ban.. Update?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When everyone keeps saying IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME were is the proof to this ? The US is not considering a ban on all stingrays at the present time and I speak to many FWS officials. Countries don't ban animals only to allow them to be exported in a few years. When bans are put into effect they tend to stay that way. Just look at our past we are always putting animals on the verge of extinction by over fishing and collecting why would sting rays be any different ? It's more then likely that other countries like Peru will also consider a ban in the future as well.

First, Thanks to everyone for all the comments. I would certainly say I got what I wanted out of this thread...lots of information and input from the "experts" as well as different opinions and viewpoints. Pretty easy to see Jd wants to buy one for cheap as possible and Mike wants selling price to remain, both for obvious reasons.
Id say we nailed it shut on exporting from brazil, or at least live anyway. However, I am very interested in the laws for the local people. Is it illegal to keep a P.leopoldi or P14 in captivity INSIDE Brazil?
Again.. thanks for all the input.. great discussion, only time will tell

there is no credible evidence to anything all this whole thing is hearsay... if they never get released again owell there are plenty of captive bred ones... if you want real answers then a trip to brazil is needed

Brazil has done this in the recent past. They have banned exports and then opened it back up again. It was before the last "hay day" when they were going for $250-$350

the ban wasnt in response to numbers..., but strictly political reasons as stated in the email.

Also in the email they explain that this is going to be reviewed and ruled on soon (weather or not to allow exports again). the email states that the only thing keeping this ban from being lifted are politacal reasons. (AKA someone in power wants to insure that a large population of rays is available to be exported dead for food) thats the jist that i get and also what was the consensus in the last thread on this.

I havent seen any evidence to say that these rays are endangered or even close. Has Anyone? I am interested to know more about this question.

I have actually read things that state the opposite. Dave made remarks in the last thread about rays being nuisances in some places. The amazon river system is one of largest aquatic ecosystems in the world behind the deep blue sea. There are areas of the amazon that have not even been explored yet. They just deemed it the longest river in the world recently because they discoverd a new tributary at its begining. So i find it hard to believe that any fish species are endangered in the amazon river system. I may be wrong but I havent heard of any. Is anyone aware of any?

The very fact that they once went for $250-$350 proves that this species is rather common in these tributaries. I understand that Pearls are rather rare in the wild (hence the past prices) But its a big bleepin river. I wouldnt be surprised if they find a new rays species in the near future considering they are still exploring....

Dave has done this...., I wish he would chime in.

I can guarantee there are endanger fish in the amazon there is no question about that... you can't say there isn't

any names..... I honestly dont know if there is or isn't.... do you know of any??

is there any evidence that these rays or any rays are low in numbers or endangered? I havent seen any, have you Nic/Mike??

I don't understand where this is going anymore....

it doesn't matter if the wild numbers are low or not they are banned and its not gonna change... I'm sure in some parts of the river they are endangered and other fish as well... do I have names Nope and I really don't care... its not my call and I can't change any part of the ban there is no solid evidence of anything... now I'm off to get another cup of coffee it is afternoon pick me up time ;)
