Mike what about Brazil opening and closing exports in the past...., do you know anything about that......??

I dont have any facts about rays for food other than Asian countries wanting them..., (they eat all the endangered / rare / unique animals---ha-ha) but i dont have any proof. Does anyone??

I know of a german wholesaler who in the last year was caught with 100 black rays being imported from brazil, I have heard from my sources that there almost impossible to get out at this point and brazil is really trying to put a stop to it, but you only need one bad inspector. I agree the ban has only done good for the rays, Yes the prices are crazy but they will only drop as the rays become more and more available. I really still dont see how there could be any genetic problems as time continues more rays will be available so new blood lines should always be available. And like T1 said prices are never going to be the same as they were 3 years ago.

+1

I feel like most non-breeders(breeders should want new blood) are looking for the ban to be lifted to bring down price.. even if the ban is lifted most things in this world are about supply and demand. I know you're saying there's a endless supply in brazil and the fishermen make peanuts for pay.

No matter how many are in the wild, the fisherman only catch so many and fishkeeping has grown leaps and bounds since the ban and black rays have become more popular with alot more people knowing about them. So you'll still have a huge demand either way, we won't be the only country looking to buy black rays and alot will go to other countrys first, either way all will still have a steep price tag. Then when you factor in you'll be buying from an importer(since you don't have the huge order/import license to import yourself) you'll be subject to whatever that importer/seller wants to charge and they'll start high unless there's no demand at all and work down. And if everyone wants wild ray blood for their breeding programs the wild ones might cost more than the CB.

IMO the ban is a mute point at the moment unless you're a breeder with deep pockets who needs new ray blood for breeding. Your best bet is to save pennys and dimes and buy some captive blood, maybe try to start your own breeding to bring down price if affordability for all is the concern. Mike is right the more available they become the less price will be, but you won't see that for a couple years as many peoples rays age and become mature.

I just think that if Brazil could simply regulate these exports better then it would be better for everyone brazil / hobbyist / breeders and also the rays.

Its settled, Im moving to Rio de Jinero! Ha, Plus the women have great.. skin! Whos comin with me??

wonder if a citizen of brazil moved to another country, would they be allowed to take their leo with them? not technically exporting if it is your own property and not to be sold right? just jokin.. prolly easier to smuggle a key out than a black ray these days..

I'm down lets get moving :headbang2 rio here I come:headbang2
