bread for fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
First off I make bread balls and little is left after my large fish inhale it and what is left is quickly gulped up by dither fish. Also not all breads are made with yeast. Besides, the yeast is only active in the beginning rise process of the dough but quickly dies at about 120 F which is alot less than the bread is cooked at and second yeast needs a high amount of sugar which probably from fruit is not even close to enough unless your making fruit punch in your tank.

when I think bread, I think "expand in water" / in fish stomache... then.... BLOAT..... I could see that NOT being healthy... maybe once in a GREAT while for a tiny snack or something...

Yea thats what I see a problem with.

That is why when birds eat bread, they die because it expands.

Not sure where you got that from. I never said all breads contain yeast. BTW, ever get fresh bakery bread that had uncooked flour on the bottom of the loaves? That's thrown on the cooling racks to keep the loaves from sticking. And, not all sugars in the tank are solely from fruits fed to the fish. The bacteria that live on the surface of, and steadily break down, driftwood also excrete simple sugars as part of their digestion. The same holds true for plants and algaes during their night cycle (a small proportion of sugars produced during the daytime Calvin cycle are lost with the release of CO2 during the night cycle of plants).

First birds don't die from bread. If so then all of the parks in america would have a pile of ducks layin everywhere and bread is fed to common birds all of the time. I think stuff like alcaseltzer kills them because they can't expell the gas quick enough or it might have something to do with their gullet. Most of the fish foods people feed (cichlid gold, cichlid staple, shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and all dehydrated foods) absorb liquid and expand. Why would that be different than bread? Second the uncooked flour on the bottom of bread is put in the cooking pans so they don't stick, not the cooling racks. Atleast thats how we do it at our bakery. The flour used to not stick is pure flour, it has no yeast or sugar in it or that would melt and cause the bread to burn. Thirdly, have you looked at ingredients in Cichlid staple and shrimp pellets and such. They have stuff like Wheat flour, corn gluten meal, rice bran, and multiple types of yeast. So, all in all I believe bread is not more harmfull than your store bought fish foods.

FYI: rats die from alcaseltzer because they dont have the 2 way valve in their stomach to let the excess gass back up through their Esophagus so they end up hemorrhaging to death, baby ducklings and baby swans will die from eating bread but thats because they don't have the enzymes needed to digest them yet (its sad we have a swan lake in my city and people end up killing a few babies every year because they dont pay attention to/follow the signs that say dont feed baby ducks bread ;o(.

I am just going on what I was told by Tri State Bird Rescuse, and I think they know what they are talking about.

Thats great. Im not interested in birds, but more interested in the debate on fish. Besides the only birds tri state mentions are doves. Thousands of types of birds in the world.

Ok, but I have already stated that personality I would never feed bread to any of fish. Besdises, if you have piscivores they are going to eat meat or herbivores that eat algae and plants. If you are looking for a cheap way to feed your always hungry fish, get the stuff fish farms use.

whole whaet bread would be good IMO as an occasional treat. as for bread killing birds, I feed mine bread all the time and they are hunky dory.

There are not many true piscivores. I have peacock bass, pacus, catfish, severums, loaches and alot of other small fish and none of them are piscivores. If I am right a piscivore is an animal that lives strictly off of fish. Most fish eat other things like worms, bugs, shrimp, snails, etc. that is a carnivore. Likewise alot of fish aren't herbivores either. That is only eating plant matter. Lots of fish are Omnivores which eat flora and fauna, which is what most of my fish are. My pacus, severums, catfish, plecos, tinfoil barbs and such are all omnivores and eat meaty food as well as plant matter. The only fish farm food I have found is specifically made for trout or catfish and maybe salmon. None of those fish are close to the types of fish I own so I choose to make my own diet to fit the species needs that I care for. You wouldn't feed a Bull mastiff food that is made for a chiuaua. The food just doesn't have the right amount of calcium, fat , and protein for a large dog. The bread I supplement with is made by me or someone I know and has less stuff that is bad for fish in it than the processed bulk food for fish farms. To me fish farm food is the dog equivilant of Old Roy from walmart compared to venison and potatoes..
