Breeder Feeder Idea

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
also with shrimp you dont need hiding places. the hiding places would only be needed if you were going to keep endlers as well.

Ive had convicts for a few months and I gt sick of them. 1. when they start breeding its not uncommon for them to eat their first few spawns 2. Thay kill anything in the tank with them 3. fry dont grow very fast (i feed microworms and flakes which does wonders for any other fry ive had) and 4. unless u feed them as tiny fry a few days after being free swimming, alot of fish will probably have a hard time catching them once they reach an inch. They're smart and will hide and theyre fast. Took my Oscar 2 hours to catch 1...... and my jack dempsey wouldnt even try, i guess he didnt see it as food. IME

Now this cherry shrimp sounds like a good idea if they dont eat their young. I was wodering since i just ousted my cons and started a platy tank if the shrimp and platies would work. or would the shrimp eat platy fry and vice versa??
@Jacob66, if they are compatible together maybe we cud do a livebearer and shrimp tank. Im also only doing a signle tank feeder project.

From what I have looked up about cherry shrimp I doubt they would eat Platy fry, however I know near nothing about Platies so i don't know if they would eat shrimp fry.

I breed both guppies and cons for feeders. Im now sure why one would think the male is going to kill the female after a certain time, I used to have a pair of cons in my big SA tank when i had it and they were paird for about 4 years and when the female died (one of the other cichlids had her cornered and beat her up) the male didnt want anything to do with any other cons, he just chilled with my JD like two old men lol.
Anyway, i think cons work great for feeders, i use them for my pike killi and my FH with no issues at all.
I do like the idea of cherry shrimp and am wondering the same thing, would they do ok and breed in a tank with live bearers (guppys in my case)

There are a few posts in this thread that are not accurate at all based on my experience.

this is because you had them in a big tank. the cons will be fine breeding in a 29 gallon tank. i bred cons in a 15 and the male killed the female after 3 spawns.
Now to straighten things out.
ENDLERS are live bearers they will not eat their young. i bred them for 6 months and never had an issue with them eating anything but you want to be safe and give them cover. They are small enough to not eat shrimp babies if there is cover.
GUPPIES/PLATIES WILL EAT SHRIMP AND THIER BABIES
CHERRY SHRIMP. will not eat thier young, you can have as many generations of them in a tank as you want.
I personally went through the same exact thing your doing now. i bred cons for food for my bichirs. the cons took a couple weeks to pair and spawned every 3 weeks. they are steady and you would have no problems using them to breed as food in a 29gal. the male might not kill the female in a 29 since the footprint is larger.
and i quoted this guy cuz he had his cons in a large tank

are there specific ones? i'm not asking you to call anyone out, I just asking for accurate info.

 Just the ones about the male killing the female after so long etc. Ive found that forced pairings with a male much larger than the female can result in killing but Ive had a pair exist peacefully for a long time.
