Breeding Blue Acara in 225g

Lots of swimmers. Moved the Severum to another tank, so they have a ton of space to themselves. Not the long term plan, but I’m really liking it so understocked for now - seems very natural.

One question on filtration, should I turn off the filter on the side of the tank they are hanging out by? Currently have two FX6’s running, and I’m worried about them getting sucked up the intake while they are so small.

Parents really have been working hard to keep them all herded together. Watching the innate parenting instincts has been really fun.

should I turn off the filter

The fry will be guided all over by the parents particularly the female. I suggest covering both intake tube or putting one cannister on the aquarium with the Severum for now. I also suggest seeding a sponge filter for the future.

I don't have any experience with a cannister filter but is there any way you can control the flow because even though the intake will be covered fry that size may be sucked against covered intake and too small to free themselves. If you had seeded sponge filters you could have moved both filters until fry got bigger. Congrats!!!

The main reason I suggest not to cut the filter off is to insure no mishaps with the filtration even a mini cycle can be deadly to the fry.

Thanks for the advice! Much appreciated.

Good news, I do have a seeded sponge. My concern is that it wouldn’t be enough flow for the tank given the footprint (6’x2’x2.5’). Maybe combine with a power head? Or is that concern not warranted?

If you plan on keeping both cannister filters on the aquarium don't worry about adding the sponge filter.

Ive got an odd situation. I have a male and two females. He has good spawns with one. He spawns with the other. There are fewer eggs and less success. Might need to remove the poor performer. Ive got about 15 about the size of a nickel. They are are in another tank. Need to part with a few.
