Breeding cons

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When I was raising Cons I would leave the parents in with the Fry until they were free swimming for about a 1 1/2 weeks. Cons are really good parents but if you remove them too soon sometimes the parents will fight.

I can see tails on some of them moving! It's so cool, my first time doing this, when do I take parents out

Congrats! See! Chances are they didnt fall off but mom move them. They do that after hatching to confuse predators they will move the nesting sight a few times. They will be fine as wigglers with mom and dad. Once free swimming which means when they look like they are just floating around and swimming together, you can set up another grow out tank and use your siphon and a bucket to suck em out into the bucket. Some advice, leave a few with parents and try to keep grow out tank at same temp as parents tank if possible use some of the old tank water in fry grow out tank. Once free swimming you can also start giving them finely powdered flake food or buy the food meant for fry.

In the time it takes to type or post to google or search the forums wouldnt it have been easier to just tell him what dithers are?

Dithera are a group of hardy fish that can take a few for the team to disperse possible aggression from the male. Usually a group of schooling fish. Unfortunately in a 10 g your room for school of anything that wont be killed instant is non existent. You can try some tetras but with little room to escape they might just be killed within a few minutes.

Your option B is to watch the male carefully. If the female os doing her nesting you getting close but if she doesnt cooperate the male can turn on her and again with little room to run she can get killed. My advice lots of plant cover considering you cant upgrade the tank.

Do NOT over feed the pair! Instead of their usual meal once a day try dispersing that same amount in a few feedings. Trust me cons its just add water and a clean environment. What you could do since you already cranked the temp up is to do partial small water changes at odd intervals with cold tap water. But i doubt you will need to reach those measure with cons. But again as others have said that 10g is pushing it for them.

This what my thought exactly, and then the whole texas thing could have been avoided.

Once the yolk sack is obsorbed and they are free swimming then you can feed fry food. It's usually 7-9 days till they reach free swim stage but again the tank temp can play a part. I had firemouth fry hatch in two days and free swim by 5 days old
