Breeding Fish for Profit

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My lfs sells calico angels all day long. They call them "koi" angels and people buy the **** out of them for 15$ a pop. It takes up less space since they are ready for purchase at 2" and you don't need to worry about breeding for A grade fry. The different colors and patterns is what makes people want to waste money on them.

Yea i was thinking the same after christmas im going to try and get a little breeding poject going and sell to some lfs owners i know. If they sell the fish for $15 i should be able to get adleast $2 a piece for 2" angels. The whole point of this is first to experience a new side of fish keeping which is breeding and second to make enough $$$ to support the growth of my fish tanks and other fish ect. Not to line my pockets thanks so far guys i appreciate the advice.

It seems like it would be more work then profit to me

To answer your questions....
So do you find it easy to get rid of fry?
YES its easy to get rid of frys... I feedem to my peacock bass or EBJD;s if they dont sell LOL.... But honestly, if you have a few pet store around you, you can probably sell 20 here and there for about 1.00-2.00 each...and probably even craigslist a few here and there for 1.00-2.00. each...so a batch of 200 frys can go by fast.... the thing is.. it usually takes frys a month or two to be sellable size....and you dont wanna craiglist them too much.. then people will buy less at the pet store... therefore the pet store will buy less from you.....but yes it can go fast...any culls can be used as feeders... I wouldnt recommend giving them away. You'll have to answer more questions then a bass just chomping on them...

Also should expecting $40- $200 a month be over expecting for Adleast two pairs?

I would say its very possible to get the 40-200.00 a month,... not sure if youre making the 40-200.00 a month after all your time, water, electricity, etc....but yes, different people produce diff result.... I would like to see your project as well... Keep us all posted!....

Haha that last part is funny. So do you find it easy to get rid of fry? Also should expecting $40- $200 a month be over expecting for Adleast two pairs?

Before you begin a breeding for profit business, check with your local fish stores. See if they will pay you cash for your fry. Most fish stores want to give you store credit. Ask what type of fish they would be interested in buying and how much they will pay. It is not easy to make money breeding fish. Also, once you try to turn your hobby into a business, it is no longer fun.

I second that!

...Hmmm, well, if you are TRULY serious then you will go Flowerhorns.

1. Expensive - ...meaning profit, but it is important to breed them yourself (if any losses occur, its OK, you bred them). Being Cichlids, they will act like the beasts they are. And I find that Flowerhorn lovers will pay for stunning fishes, including me.
2. Horny - ...luckily these fishes knows whats up, unfortunately they are also vicious killers
3. Hardy - ...they are tougher than the average bear, I mean EBJD
4. Market - ...these guys are international, and NO, you don't have to buy from the Motherland...Made in USA are masterpieces too.

They are the 330 gallon totes that has a cage around them. You can cut the whole top, throw a few sponge filters in them, fill them up and use them as a grow out tank. Some people use them for aquaponics, other use them for smaller fishes. Depending where you get your 330 gallon totes from, make sure that it is food grade. Some holds soap, pesticides, and some simply just had syrups for soda makers...I would def. skip the soap and pesticides ones and get a soda one. You can either get them for free at soda places if you have connections, or pay a small fee on CL... either way, its cheaper then a 330 tank...
